LAKE TAYLOR WHIZZES PAST NORCOM IN DISTRICT OPENER

To a Norcom defender, Toni Harrell must have looked like a blur.

Every time Norcom turned around, Harrell was popping out of the crowd to hit a jumper or sneaking behind the defense to slam a dunk.

When his Titans went cold in the second quarter, Harrell stayed hot, scoring 12 of Lake Taylor's 16 points to keep the Titans up by one. By game's end he had netted 13 points to pace the third-seeded Lake Taylor to a 67-46 Eastern District boys basketball quarterfinal win over Norcom.

``It was a good game,'' Harrell said. ``At first we jump-started and got into it. Then for a little while, we were less intense - we were energized at first, then the energy went down. In the second half, the energy came back and we came together as a team.''

The Titans will face Maury, an 82-46 winner over Wilson, Thursday night at 6:00 at Wilson.

Eighth-ranked Lake Taylor (16-6) was hot early, but the Greyhounds caught up at the end of the first quarter and took a four-point lead in the second quarter, their largest in the game.

But Harrell took control and put the Titans up 27-25 at the half.

``We came out and the intensity was pretty good,'' Lake Taylor coach John Kelly said. ``They got into their game plan and we were lucky to take the lead at the half. Toni Harrell really stepped up, then Toot Young really got active in the game.''

Harrell went 12 of 14 from the floor for the game, including 5 of 6 in the second half, and 5 of 5 from the free throw line.

In the second half, Lake Taylor's passing game took off. The Titans worked the offensive end, slipping the ball behind defenders for layups and forcing turnovers with a pressing man-to-man defense.

Young scored 19. Norcom was led by Carlton Bowens with 16.
