Jeanette Martin Bass, Ph.D., 75, wife of the late Frederick Alexander Bass, died Wednesday Feb. 19, 1997, after a short illness.
A resident of Chapin, she formerly lived in Hayes, Va. Dr. Bass graduated from the Riverside School of Nursing and for a number of years worked in various capacities as a nurse. She returned to college in 1964 and graduated from the College of William and Mary. She received a master's degree from Old Dominion University and a doctorate from the University of South Carolina. She taught English at Thomas Nelson Community College, the University of Marylandand in Germany, as well as other sites. She was the author of a novel, End of the Beginning, several poems and was listed in Who's Who of American Women.
During her lifetime, Dr. Bass was active in various community organizations including the P.T.A. and the Speaker's Bureau and was past president of the Hampton Jr. Woman's Club. She was a committed Christian and former Sunday School teacher. She had been a member of Bethany Methodist Church and Union Baptist Church, both in Gloucester Point, Va.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law of Chapin, retired Lt. Col. Robert and the Rev. Cheryl B. Rhoades; four grandchildren, Rob, Derick and Geoffrey, all of Columbia, Heidi of Chapin; a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth of Columbia; two sisters, Virginia Mahler Weller of Virginia Beach, Rose Giersch of Gloucester Point; a brother, Lacy Martin of Gloucester Point; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Friday in Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton by the Rev. Cheryl Rhodes. Lawrence B. Wood Funeral Home, Hampton, is handling arrangements. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Dr. Jeanette Bass scholarship fund, c/o Newberry Federal Savings and Loan, 127 Amicks Ferry Road, Chapin, S.C. 29036.
