NEW U.S. OPEN STADIUM TO BE NAMED FOR ARTHUR ASHE

TENNIS New U.S. Open stadium to be named for Arthur Ashe

NEW YORK - In a departure from the trend of selling naming rights for stadiums to corporations, the U.S. Tennis Association on Wednesday named the new stadium at the National Tennis Center for the late Arthur Ashe.

The stadium will be called Arthur Ashe Stadium. USTA president Harry Marmion said there had been no offers from corporate sponsors. And, he added, ``we never looked for any.''

Ashe, who died in 1993 after contracting AIDS through a blood transfusion, captured the 1968 U.S. Open, the first one to admit professionals as well as amateurs, the Australian Open in 1970 and Wimbledon in 1975.

The new stadium, part of the USTA's $234 million expansion project, will be ready for this summer's U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 25. Barbers of C'ville named to ACC All-Academic team

GREENSBORO - Virginia's Tiki and Ronde Barber and Florida State's Warrick Dunn were named to the 1996 ACC All-Academic Football team.

Barber was named ACC Player of the Year after leading the conference in rushing with 1,360 yards and 14 touchdowns while Dunn finished third in the league with 1,180 yards. Dunn concluded his career sixth on the league's all-time rushing list with 3,744 yards while Tiki Barber finished 14th with 3,224 yards.

Barber and Dunn are among nine players on the honors unit who earned first or second team All-ACC recognition last fall. Other All-ACC selections include Virginia's Jamie Sharper and Todd White, Clemson's Jim Bundren and Glenn Rountree, Florida State's Daryl Bush and Duke's John Krueger.

Joining Barber and Dunn in the backfield is Virginia quarterback Tim Sherman who passed for 1,572 yards and four TDs. Defensively, Sharper, Bush and Duke's Chike Egbuniwe all finished among the league leaders in tackles. LOCALLY Sun Wheelers in tourney

Bob Petty scored 58 points in four games to help the Virginia Beach Sun Wheelers post a 3-1 record in the 16th annual Carousel House Basketball Tournament. Jeremy Demetris and Jody Shiflett each scored 39 points in the tournament and Tony Briley was named to the all-tournament team. The Sun Wheelers are 40-9 overall and a league-leading 5-1 in the Capital Conference.
