Hubert L. ``Chief'' Snipes Sr., 69, of the 900 block of Lake Village Drive, died Feb. 18, 1997, in Portsmouth General Hospital.
A retired self-employed carpenter, Mr. Snipes was a member of Celestial Baptist Church, Portsmouth, and a U.S. Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Cherry M. Snipes; six daughters, Joyce Turner, Marlene Copeland, Vertina Cross, Marsha Jordan, all of Portsmouth, Alice Mann of Richmond and Sylvia Brice of Hampton; four sons, Elwood Snipes and Spencer Snipes, both of Portsmouth, Pervis Snipes of Fort Washington, Md., and Ronald Snipes of Chesapeake; sister, Hattie McPherson of Portsmouth; two brothers, Eugene Snipes and John Snipes, both of Portsmouth; 26 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; aunt, Mable Foreman of Portsmouth; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Celestial Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Leon J. Boone. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Portsmouth, with military honors. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, will begin at 10 a.m. today. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Saturday. The family will be at 1106 Lake View Drive, Portsmouth, and will assemble there for the funeral.
