GTE LAWSUIT DISMISSED: A federal judge in Richmond on Thursday dismissed a lawsuit filed by GTE Corp. against AT&T Corp. and the State Corporation Commission over a commission ruling aimed at helping AT&T compete with GTE in local telephone service. GTE sued in December after the SCC ordered it to provide AT&T a 23.4 percent discount to lease GTE's network for reselling local service. GTE said the so-called ``wholesale'' discount was so low it would give AT&T an unfair advantage in wooing customers. U.S. District Judge James Spencer ruled that GTE jumped the gun in filing the suit, saying that the phone company first must negotiate an interconnection agreement with AT&T under the terms prescribed by the SCC.
SURRY UNIT OFFLINE: Virginia Power brought its Surry Unit 1 reactor offline Wednesday night. The move came just two days after the company shut its Unit 2 reactor because of an electrical outage in a control panel.
