COURTHOUSE RAMP: County crews are building a handicapped-accessible entrance to the Dare County Courthouse, a project that should be completed in about a month, said County Manager Terry Wheeler.
``We hoped to finish sooner, but because court is in session there about every other week, that's going to delay construction,'' he said.
Exact cost of the project is not known. Wheeler said that because county workers are being used in the project, the only cost is for building materials.
The next step in making the courthouse completely accessible will be construction of an elevator to the second-floor courtroom.
``We're looking into that,'' Wheeler said. ``It's something OSHA (the Occupational Safety and Health Administration) wants us to do.''
JEFF WHITT CHOSEN: Jeff Whitt, a fourth-grade teacher at Manteo Elementary School, has been nominated for the Sallie Mae First Class Teacher Award, and will represent Dare County schools in state competition in March.
Susan Nordmann, principal at Manteo Elementary School, said Whitt embodies the attributes of an excellent teacher and educator. ``Jeff is a positive role model for students and adults alike. He involves parents in the educational process, motivates students positively, and creates a family-type atmosphere in the classroom while teaching fourth-grade curriculum in innovative ways.''
The Sallie Mae Award is administered by the American Association of School Administrators. Exemplary new teachers chosen in state competition receive a cash award and a trip to Washington, D.C. Sallie Mae is the leading funding source for higher education loans in the United States. ELIZABETH CITY
COAST GUARD MEDEVAC: A 33-year-old Korean national was listed in stable condition Thursday afternoon after being injured aboard a cargo ship and transported by the Coast Guard to a Norfolk hospital.
Yun Chang Hwan, 33, was hoisted onto a Coast Guard H-60 helicopter from the motor vessel Vega, located Thursday morning about 200 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras.
Both the chopper, which was sent out at 6:45 a.m., and a C-130 airplane that assisted in the medical evacuation are from Air Station Elizabeth City.
Yun Chang Hwan arrived around 10 a.m. at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he was admitted with shoulder and back injuries from a fall on the ship.
MACK SAWYER HONORED: Elizabeth City photographer A. Mack Sawyer recently received a 1996-97 Fuji Masterpiece Award at the 69th Annual Convention of Professional Photographers of North Carolina.
The Fuji Masterpiece Award is given annually to one person in each of four categories. Sawyer won the illustrative division for his ``Sunset Sail'' entry, which featured a sailboat passing an Ocracoke Island marker.
Sawyer, of A. Mack Sawyer Photography, also was presented two court of honor awards, five gold corners and two second-place ribbons and plaques.
Sawyer's other award-winning entry was in the men's division, which featured a portrait of Judge J.C. Cole.
During the five-day convention in Durham, Sawyer also received a $100 scholarship toward the East Coast School of Professional Photography to be held this summer in Raleigh.
