NSU LANDS 4 ON ALL-CIAA TEAMS WHITFIELD, CARMICHAEL ARE MEN'S PICKS; SESSOMS, BULLOCK EARN WOMEN'S HONORS.

Two players each from the Norfolk State's men's and women's basketball teams were named to the All-CIAA team Thursday. Two other players, Tajai Young and Charlette Fayton, were named as the men's and women's rookies of the year, respectively.

Guard Maurice Whitfield and forward Rodney Carmichael, both seniors, were named to the men's team for the first time. Center Michelle Sessoms of Portsmouth and forward LaTina Bullock, also seniors, were named to the women's team for the second time.

Whitfield averages 11.8 points for the third-place Spartans (16-8, 11-5 CIAA). Whitfield is third in the conference in assists (140) and fourth in steals (58).

Carmichael, the team's leading scorer (18.9 points per game) and rebounder (9.3 rebounds per game), ranks in the top three in both conference categories.

Bullock, second on the school's all-time scoring list (2,095), is second on the team in scoring (15.5 ppg) and rebounding (6.5 rpg) for the Spartanettes.

Wilson High graduate Sessoms leads NSU in scoring (18 ppg), rebounding (11.9 rpg) and steals (88). She's in the top five in all three conference categories.

Young, who sat out last year, averages 11 points a game for the season and has played at both guard and forward.

Fayton, a Kempsville High graduate, is third on the team in scoring (10.4) and rebounding (4.8), and is second in steals (71).

Elizabeth City State, which has clinched its first Northern Division title since 1981, had two players named to the All-CIAA team and a third player named to the all-rookie team.

Guard Adrian Bell and forward Maurice Mincey were named to the all-conference team for ECSU (18-4, 14-2). Bayside grad Marcus Riddick was named to the all-rookie team for the Vikings.
