Hugh Emsley Helms Jr., 74, of the 9300 block of Peachtree St., died Feb. 20, 1997, in a local hospital.
Born in Wingate, N.C., he was a retired senior chief petty officer of the U.S. Navy with 31 years service. He was a member of Norfolk Masonic Lodge (NU)1 AF&AM Khedive Temple of the Shrine, AAONMS.
Survivors include his wife, Helen H. Helms; a son, Hugh Emsley Helms III of Norfolk; three sisters, Jane Redwine of Waxhaw, N.C., Pearl Dee Austin of Wingate, N.C., Mae Gilbert of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, Charles Helms of Pensacola, Fla., and Dick Helms of Murrells Inlet, S.C.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, by the Rev. Terry Beck. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Diabetes Association.
