MAN WANTED AS SUSPECT IN GRAVE STATUE THEFT

Police have issued grand larceny warrants for the arrest of a 24-year-old man suspected in the theft of a statue from a grave in Elmwood Cemetery.

Matthew Stuart Jernigan is being sought.

The marble statue had marked the grave of Marie McKay, who died March 26, 1893, at the age of 3.

The statue apparently was stolen from the cemetery, at 238 E. Princess Anne Road, between October 1995 and Jan. 16, 1996, when it was sold to a local businessman who was unaware that it had been stolen.
