In a cold, rough and muddy rite of passage, the last all-male
Virginia Military Institute freshman class of Rats scrambles up a
hill Thursday in Lexington. They had to work their way up the hill
as upperclassmen below held their feet and those above helped pull
them free. By the time the Rats reached the top, mud had clogged
their noses and eyes and smeared every feature into a crust.
