Lucy Leigh Benton Sykes, 79, passed away Sunday, March 30, 1997, in Riverside Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Nansemond County and had been a Peninsula resident for the past 10 years. She was a graduate of Cypress High School and received her certification as a registered nurse at Parrish Memorial Hospital, Portsmouth. She worked with the American Red Cross Bloodmobile for many years and was a member of First United Methodist Church, Newport News.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 56 years, Claud W. Sykes; daughter, Sandra Sykes Tudor and her husband, Ken, of Newport News; three sisters, Louise Benton Dailey of Suffolk, Marguerite Benton Lyles of Richmond and Mary Anne Benton Edwards of Norfolk; two grandchildren, Tina George and Carl Adams; two great-grandsons, Kyle and Keith George.
A memorial service will be conducted at 7 tonight in Weymouth Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service. Interment will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Holly Lawn Cemetery, Suffolk. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the American Red Cross, Hampton Roads Chapter, 4915 W. Mercury Blvd., Hampton, Va. 23666.
