MAYBELLE R. POWELL

Maybelle Roberts Powell, 80, a longtime resident of Portsmouth, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 1997, in a Gulf Breeze, Fla., nursing home.

The daughter of Grady and Minnie Roberts, Maybelle was born on Sept. 20, 1917, and grew up in Villa Rica, Ga. She completed a nursing degree in Birmingham, Ala. and served as a registered nurse in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In early 1942, she married Dr. Roy R. Powell, U.S. Navy, in the Washington Cathedral, Washington, D.C.

In addition to Dr. Powell, a retired Navy rear admiral and her husband of 55 years, she is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Carol Powell, Thomas and Julia Powell and daughter and son-in-law, Debborah P. and David Bellamy; six grandchildren, Dan and Samantha Powell, Chad and Chelsea Powell and Kimberlyn and Megan Bellamy.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Hospice of Northwest Florida Inc. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
