Norfolk State University's precision flight team won the recent National Intercollegiate Flying Association regional safety and flight evaluation conference at Chesapeake Municipal Airport.
NSU, which hosted the event, even had one of their own selected as the top pilot in the region. Mark Evans, a 20-year-old junior who lives in Chesapeake, won that honor for the second consecutive year.
``We dominated the flying events,'' Evans said at a celebratory meeting with NSU President Marie V. McDemmond at the college last Friday.
``We dominated the landing,'' he said, ``the navigation, the computer accuracy events.''
The trophies told the tale. Numerous golden statuettes and medals with red, white and blue ribbons lined a table in a conference room where the NSU flight team, in matching green shirts, greeted the president.
She seemed pleased.
``My,'' she said. ``It must be a great program.''
``Well, I hope so,'' answered its founder, Darryl Stubbs.
The team scored 220 points in events that tested piloting, navigation and safety.
Two other NSU pilots placed in the top five. Daryl E. Trent, of Richmond, placed fourth and Rufus A. Lensey, of Emporia, fifth.
