A fleeing suspect faces charges after a high speed chase ends in dramatic
fashion in Roanoke.
It looked like a scene out of some police show on T-V, but it was real.
At least a dozen officers and state troopers joined in a two- county car
chase last night that ended with a dramatic crash in Roanoke.

The Roanoke woman who locked an 84- year- old man in the trunk of his car
for two days pled guilty to the crime today.
Circuit Judge Diane Strickland found 31- year- old Mitzi Horton guilty of
robbery and abduction.
83- year- old Vernon Laughon (lawn) was found in the trunk of his Oldsmobile

Another Martinsville textile company is trimming its work force.
Tultex officials confirmed the company will eliminate up to 140 jobs by the
end of this month.
Tultex public relations officer, Kathy Rogers, says the cuts have already

necessity to keep the company competitive.
Rogers says the job eliminations will impact employees in the cutting and

The Virginia basketball program's top prospect was in court today on
malicious wounding charges, the Cavaliers talk about the ACC tourney,
and Roy Stanley will preview the Big South tournament which tips off at
Radford University tomorrow.
Melvin Whittaker, the University of Virginia's top basketball prospect for
next season, has been charged with malicious wounding.
The 6'10" Whittaker spent today in a Charlottesville court in a bond
hearing where a bail of 10 thousand dollars was set.
According a UVA source, Whittaker was playing basketball at Slaughter
Recreation Center, on the Virginia campus. Whittaker quit playing and left
after he exchanged words with UVA football player Maurice Anderson. Outside of
the recreation center, Whittaker, who played at Hargrave Military, and Anderson
again reportedly had words and, Whittaker allegedly slashed Anderson across the
face with a sharp object.
Whittaker was released under his own recognizance today. He is facing up 5
to 20 years in prison and up to a 100 thousand dollar fine.
The basketball team must forget about this incident and focus on Friday's
night's game with Wake Forest in the ACC tournament. The Cavs must stop both
Tim Duncan and the deac's outside threats to win.

The Big South announced its all conference teams today.
Former Bassett star and Radford freshman Kim Hairston was named the Big
South rookie of the year. She scored 15.4 points per game.
Also, former Fieldale Collinsville star samantha Ferguson was named to the
All-rookie team; She plays for UNC-Greensboro.
And former Floyd County standout Leigh-Ann Pursifull made the Big South all
rookie team as well.
The Roanoke men's lacrosse team proved why it is deserving of the nations
number 5 preseason ranking today as the Maroons beat 11th ranked Alfred in
Roanoke was anxious to get an early season win against a northern team.
The big gun for the maroons today was Billy Metz. The senior attackman ripped
the rope four times on the day to lead Roanoke to it's season opening win.
