A major drug roundup in Roanoke tonight-- authorities make a number of
arrests and seize cocaine and other drugs.

The Grand Jury yesterday returned 96 indictments against 55 adults and 12
They're charged with distributing crack cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and

Kimberly McBroom joins us now from the newsroom with details.
Kim, how long have police been working on this case?
Well Connie, the investigation began in early spring.
Police informants posed as drug addicts and purchased small amounts of
crack cocaine and other drugs
from mainly street dealers and neighborhood stash houses.
Police began targeting neighborhoods around the city as a result of numerous
citizen complaints of drug activity and other crimes.
Most charges were in the Lafayette Boulevard and 13th street Southwest
Other targeted neighborhoods include Melrose Avenue, Williamson Road and
So far, police have arrested 24 adults and five juveniles.

Authorities say most of them will be arraigned in court tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the search continues for the others.

He may be 76- years- old... but Roanoke County prosecutors want Frank
(HELL-veh-steen) Helvestine to spend the REST of his life behind bars.
He was wheeled into court this morning with an oxygen tank at his side.
Helvestine is charged with four felonies including murder, malicious
wounding and arson-- with the accusations stemming from a crime committed more
than 20 years ago.
In 1975, 23- month- old Carrie Mask was walking outside with her parents,
when a car bomb exploded.
Authorities now believe Helvestine planted the bomb in an attempt to kill a
woman who was involved in an interracial relationship.
This morning, Helvestine-- who owns a house along with other liquid assets--
asked for a court appointed attorney.
But his request was denied.

One other note-- Helvestine was in court last week fighting a speeding
ticket-- but he walked into the courtroom then on his own.
Authorities believe they've found the remains of two New York state
teenagers-- missing since Thursday night.

Lynchburg city council tonight tabled a decision on whether to allow a civil
rights mural to be displayed in City Hall.

Later this week, city manager Charles Church will meet with local museum
officials to discuss the best place for this mural to be displayed.
If that turns out "not" to be city hall, we could see a highly partisan
battle when the issue goes before city council.
Some say there isn't much justice in district courts in our area.
To make their point, the Roanoke chapter of the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference made a trip to Washington D-C.
Today members braved the rainy weather to demonstrate outside the U-S
Supreme Court building.
They say they're protesting the unfair treatment of minorities in civil
rights cases in the Roanoke area.

Protestors say injustice occurs in other federal courts, not just in

A memorial now marks the spot of a fatal accident in Danville where two
children were killed.
But the Virginia Department of Transportation says the 900- pound statue of
the Virgin Mary and two smaller angels is a traffic hazard and must be removed.
The family who erected the memorial says it isn't going anywhere.

There's a warning out that a widely used osteoporosis medicine can damage
Fosamax is a hormone-free medication used to fight the bone-thinning
condition common among older women.
It's been taken by more than 400-thousand women worldwide since hitting the
market a year ago.
The problem apparently occurs when the pills are not swallowed completely
and come into prolonged contact with the esophagus.
Doctors say the medicine should be taken in the morning with lots of water.
Patients should not lie down again until after breakfast.
In the event you become too ill to make your own decisions, planning for
your future now may be the best way to go.

The man who has done more for cycling in the states since Greg Lemond,
revealed today that he is battling cancer.
Lance Armstrong had a malignant testicle removed last week, but doctors are
hopeful he can make a complete recovery.

The two time defending Tour DuPont champion had surgery last Thursday and is
now undergoing chemotherapy to control the often agressive cancer.
His particular disease, which has spread to part of his stomach, is
considered to be between the moderate and advanced stages.
And Armstrong says he likely has had the cancer for a number of years.

The cure rate for testicular cancer in its advanced stage, ranges between 65

But because Armstrong is in excellent shape and is just 25 years old,
