The proposal will likely start a back and forth bidding war between CSX and
N- S claims the planned merger between Conrail and CSX would cause a rail
hauling monopoly on the east coast.
If Norfolk Southern wins out, it would be able to tap into a number of
northeast markets, like New York.
But if it loses... Norfolk Southern's future is unclear.

After Norfolk Southern put its proposal on the table... we tried contacting
CSX for reaction.
We received a "no comment" response. But more than likely, it will
sweeten the pot in the coming weeks.
A plea bargain has spared the life of 20 year- old William Spencer Gammon.
Gammon was to have stood trial next month for shooting his father to death
and wounding his stepmother.
Today Carroll County prosecutor Greg Goad reduced the capital murder charge
to first degree murder, in exchange for Gammon's pleas of no contest.

Mark Lilly today refused to testify against his brother Ben, who's on trial
for capital murder in Montgomery County.
Instead, Mark invoked his fifth amendment right against self- incrimination.
The prosecutor then played Mark's taped statement to police, in which he
named his brother as the triggerman in the shooting of Virginia Tech student
Testimony in Ben Lilly's trial resumes tomorrow.
Mark Lilly is scheduled to stand trial for his part in the murder next
A Halifax County man accused of killing three people on Election Night a
year ago was back in court today.

Raleigh Dean Martin was arrested last November for killing his wife, Marion.
32- year old Joseph Siffert, Junior and his girlfriend Barbara Hackney were
discovered shot to death in a neighboring home.
Authorities say the couple was killed with their infant daughter nearby.
Martin appeared in court today for a motions hearing.
The judge agreed to let Martin's attorney spend up to five- thousand dollars
to hire a private investigator.

The couple on tenth street in Roanoke had fought before- -sometimes
So when Garret Wayne Cunningham and Rhonda Banks Cunningham got into an
argument early this morning, she went and got a gun.
She later told police she first put the gun to her own head out of
frustration. When she lowered the weapon, her 42-year old husband tried to
take it away from her, and it went off as they grappled over it.
He died a few hours later of a gun shot to the head.
She has NOT been charged- -but COULD be- -once test are completed and the
prosecutor reviews the facts.

The protest over the ownership of the Dumas Hotel moved indoors today.
Roanokers who want the building returned to its former owners brought their
complaints back to city council.
Now known as the Henry Street Music Center, the building is owned by Total
