Lynchburg school officials say they'll need more than one million dollars
MORE in local funding to run the city's schools next year.
The school board got its first look at the 57- million dollar budget during
its meeting tonight.
But the concern is over what's NOT included in that total.. nearly one
million dollars worth of staff and programs have been slashed.
That includes the middle school DARE program, and more than seven student
Educators worry what effect that will have on some children.

interchange that would funnel traffic directly to the mall.
Preliminary engineering studies have the four lane access road routed behind
Tire America within 20 to 40 feet of the Huff Lane Magnet School.
That's too close for some parents.

When high school students break the law now in Roanoke County, help is just
down the hall.
This month, full time police officers were assigned to each of the four
County high schools.
The officers have already made some arrests,
including 8 teens who were arrested at Northside earlier this month.
Police found a handgun and marijuana in their car.

Stovall says if students know officers are always there, they'll be less
likely to commit a crime at school.
A Halifax County man convicted of killing three people will spend the rest
of his life in prison.
Raleigh Dean Martin could have received the death penalty, but today a judge
sentenced Martin to life plus 48-years.
Prosecutors say Martin murdered his wife, Marion, before shooting and
killing a couple who lived nearby.
Authorities say Joseph Siffert, Junior and his girlfriend, Barbara Hackney
were shot to death inside their home.
The murders happened on the same night in November of '95.
Rescuers recovered a body from the New River yesterday after a four-day
81 year-old James Marshall Neese jumped off the Peppers Ferry bridge in
Fairlawn last Thursday.
Rescue crews used boats and divers throughout the weekend to continue
searching for his body.
It finally turned up in the McCoy area yesterday.
Investigators are calling the death a suicide.
A fiery explosion at a Farm equipment company in Texas.
One person is missing and feared dead- at least one other person is hurt.
The blast rocked Johnson Filtration Products- sparked fires in three
buildings and spewed thick black smoke into the sky.
The biggest problem- strong wind.
45 mile an hour gusts kept fire crews at the scene for hours.
The flames ignited grass fires-

But Biggie Small, as some call him, was no stranger to trouble. He had a
lengthy rap sheet including drugs, weapons and assault charges. Police are
still trying to solve the mystery surrounding the fatal shooting on march 9-th
that claimed Wallace's life. was it a random drive by shooting? Was it gang
related? Or much more sinister. Was it some kind of retribution for the
shooting last september of another famous rapper, Tupac Shakur.
Attention is now beginning to focus on an unspoken rivalry between east and
west coast rap recording artists. On Monday evening a handful of west coast
rap stars gathered at a church to discuss what appears to be a troublesome

One of the Roanoke Valley's foremost business and civic leaders has passed
George Cartledge- the chairman of Grand Piano and Furniture, died Sunday.
He's part of an older generation of leaders that met regularly and helped
shape Roanoke's development.
Among his contemporaries, G-Frank Clement, who once ran Shenandoah Life.
Clement admires Cartledge for many things, including the way he quickly
built Grand into one of the nation's largest retail chains.

A Danville National Guard unit in Bosnia is still undergoing training.
The 46-man unit will work as peacekeepers but as Teresa Hamilton reports,

The Virginia militia movement is keeping a close eye on Danville's Guard
unit and a Salem Reserve unit in Germany.
The Virginia Citizens Militia says it's an umbrella network representing
scores of local militia groups statewide.
Its message to Virginians serving in the military is: do NOT leave the
country... serving overseas is a trap from the New World Order.
A spokesman says its NOT a one way street -- the militia gets regular mail
from Guard and Reserve members.

A London shopkeeper can continue to honor the King.
The King of Rock and Roll that is.
Sid Shaw runs a shop called Elvisly Yours.
There he sells everything from Elvis Presley toothpaste and deodorant to
photos and other trinkets.
But unlike the King's records, the store was not a big hit with the Presley
It sued, but today after a TEN YEAR battle, a British judge ruled in Shaw's
He said since Elvis did not own his name when he was alive, his estate
doesn't now that he is gone.
