Some are shocked to learn Bud Pritchett of Roanoke is a murder suspect.

Volunteer and public service are NOT terms often associated with murder
But shortly before Livingston "Bud" Pritchett was arrested for the murder of
a man at a rest stop in Ironto, he was in Roanoke's Festival in the Park
office... talking about helping out with the event later this month.
Festival director Wendy Schultz says Pritchett has donated his time for more
than six years.
In fact she has a picture of the two of them in her office.
She doesn't believe Pritchett could hurt anyone... and doesn't think the
charges against him are true.

Estel Singleton was found dead at the rest area last week.
Police believe Pritchett tried using Singleton's A- T- M card minutes after
Governor George Allen's had enough of violence on the interstates.
Today, he ordered that private security guards begin patrolling four
interstate highway rest areas where travellers have been attacked in recent

Judge Richard Patisall rejected a grievence filed by twenty eight

The firefighters take with issue with the city's move to combine Emergency
Medical services with the traditional job of firefighter.

It's been a year and half since E-M-S merged with the fire department.
The city's fire chief says he was about to start cross training...teaching
paramedics to fight fires and upgrading the medical training of firefighters.
But that was suspended when the firefighters' filed their grievance.

Local officials are expressing their "extreme disappointment" with U-S
Airways' decision to close its maintenance facility here.
Today, they asked the airline to reconsider.
The closing will cost the Roanoke Valley 120 high- paying jobs.
In a letter to U-S Airways chairman Stephen Wolf, Roanoke Mayor David Bowers
and County Supervisors Chairman Bob Johnson asked to meet with airline
Bowers and Johnson said they would like to discuss any assistance the local
governments can provide to keep the maintenance facility in the Roanoke Valley.
Virginia Democrats are calling it the most irresponsible tax scheme in the

36- year- old Linda Parsons avoided a trial by pleading guilty this morning
to voluntary manslaughter.
Parsons shot and killed her 45- year- old husband Donald during an argument

Bedford County authorities say they took a substantial marijuana dealer off
the streets today.
An early morning raid in the Taylor's Mountain area ended with the arrests
of 40- year- old Howard Thomas Bennett Junior and 32- year- old Kimberly
Police seized a 1984 Chevy Camaro, five pounds of marijuana and about 500
dollars in cash.
Bennett is charged with possession and distribution of marijuana.
Police say more arrests could follow.

Western Virginians needing kidney transplants will soon have to travel to
get the procedure.
At the end of August, Carilion Health System will transfer its kidney
transplant program to the University of Virginia.
Carilion Roanoke Memorial has performed 73 kidney transplants in the past
Officials say the low volume of available organs and the proximity of other
transplant programs contributed to their decision.

The Salem Avalanche hosted the Prince William Cannons tonight at Memorial
