Two 18-year olds, arrested in Nebraska will return to Central Virginia to
face murder charges.

Investigators in Appomattox County got a break in the first murder case
there in three years...

The body of 23- year- old Lisa Yvonne Crider was found May 12th. She'd been
killed by a shotgun blast to the head. her body was found in the James River.
Homicide detectives from across the region were called in to investigate her
Saturday, authorities in Lincoln, Nebraska arrested 18-year olds Trevor
Andrew Jones and Brandon Wayne Hedrick.
The pair had been wanted for two armed robberies near Lynchburg earlier this
Evidence from their car and statements they gave police implicated the two
in Crider's murder.
Both have waived extradition to Virginia and could be returned as early as
A former Virginia Tech Football player and a sixth round draft pick in the
N-F-L -- was found guilty of assault today.
Cornell Brown was sentenced to 30-days in jail, with all but two suspended.
On the stand, Jonathon Nelson testified, Brown struck him on the head
during an altercation, knocking him to the pavement.
Brown admitted he swung at someone but said he initially said he didn't
know who, or why.

Brown's attorney says he's disappointed in the verdict but will NOT appeal.
Brown is expected to serve his two-day sentence over the weekend.
It will be TWO more weeks before Roanoke City Council makes a final vote on
proposed salary increases for the mayor and council members.
The decision on whether to give Mayor David Bowers a 28- percent increase...
and council members a 14- percent pay hike was scheduled to take place this

Council promises to vote on the salary increases June second.
If Bedford County school teachers are going to get paid the rest of the
school year, it will have to come at the expense of some school construction
The board of Supervisors tonight refused to give the school system extra
money to finish out the school year, instead supervisors recommend the school
board borrow the million dollars it needs from the three-point-two million
dollars available in the school construction fund.
That would still leave the school system with more than a million dollars
worth of debt to carry over into the next fiscal year.
The school board is expected to vote on this option Thursday night.
A Christiansburg man accused of killing his wife and wounding his daughter
pled NOT guilty today.
Michael Knowles allegely killed his wife because he thought she was having
an affair that began on the internet.
He admitted killing her in a letter to columnist Ann Landers, then sued her
when she published the letter.
Today he said he's innocent, and made another claim.

granted an honorable discharge in lieu of trial on adultery and disobedience

It looks like the Air Force's first female B-52 pilot won't avoid a court
Earlier today, Lieutenant Kelly Flinn's attorney filed a request for an
honorable discharge instead of a court martial.
But Pentagon sources say Air force Secretary Sheila Widnall has no intention
of granting the discharge.
The 26 year old pilot faces charges of adultery and lying.

Another victim of last year's outbreak of Legionnaire's disease has filed
suit against Lowe's.
Jonathan East says he "came in close proximity" to vapors from a hot tub
display at Lowe's in Christiansburg last October.
He was hospitalized and nearly died.
East says he's now "totally disabled," and has had to close his business.
The Montgomery County resident is asking two million dollars in damages.
An earlier claim filed by John Allen Kirk is set for trial in November.
It's been hailed as one of the most significant architectural structures in
Yesterday, a piece of it came crashing down at the University of Virginia.
The balcony collapse during graduation on the historic lawn killed one
woman, and injured 17 others.
School officials say the culprit appears to be a corroded iron rod.

The University is covering the medical and counseling costs of those injured
in the collapse.
The collapse is the first structural failure of the architecture Jefferson
built in 1822.
The wife of NASCAR team owner Leonard Wood died in an accident Saturday
night...two others were killed in that crash.

The Woods' were returning from the Charlotte Motor Speedway when their van

For the eighth consecutive year Norfolk Southern has captured one of the
railroad industry's most coveted honors, E-H Harriman Memorial Safety Award.

A bitter dispute has an adult care facility in Botetourt County on the
verge of closing.
Residents at Shenandoah Acres recently found out they'll have to move.
The director of the program says all 36 people who live there have somewhere

The owner of the adult care business did not want to comment on camera.
The program administrator says the Virginia Department of Social Services is
aware of the way the dispute is being resolved.

Regular exposure to secondhand smoke appears to almost double the risk of
heart disease in women who don't smoke.
That's the finding in a study of 32-thousand nurses.
The Centers for Disease Control says the study on second hand smoke is the
strongest so far in this area of research.
Scientists at Harvard Medical School led the study.
The latest research is in tomorrow's journal "Circulation,"-- a publication
of the Dallas-based American Heart Association.

diploma along with 13 other Deacons in the class of 97.
He is expected to be the first millionaire in his class and the first round
draft pick of the San Antonio Spurs.

The Salem Avalanche and Lynchburg Hillcats hooked up again tonight at
Memorial Stadium in a little doubleheader action.
