Beyer says a national apology wouldn't hurt anything, and he wouldn't be

Virginia's legislative delegation in Washington is split on the issue, with
Chuck Robb and Rick Boucher approving the concept.

Virgil Goode says he's waiting to hear from the people of the fifth district

Is nude dancing a form of free speech protected by the first amendment?
The lawyer for a Roanoke nightspot says the club's dancers were only
exercising their constitutional rights.
But prosecutors say a Roanoke jury should decide.
Authorities charged Girls, Girls Girls with obscenity after vice detectives
observed nudity and sexually explicit activity on four occasions.
Today, attorney Jack (KEN-it) Kennet said he will argue that the dances
were choreographed and had artistic merit.

Judge Clifford Weckstein said he will allow cameras in the courtroom for a
jury trial that is now set to begin in late September.

Former Carroll County administrator Billy Mitchell pled guilty today to
fraud and money laundering.
A hearing was held in federal court in Abingdon.
Mitchell admitted taking more than 400-thousand dollars from the county and
its industrial development authority.
He also pled guilty to filing a false income tax return.
Mitchell will be sentenced in September.
He's also facing state charges in the case.
Jim Gilmore's proposed tax cut won't stand up in court.
So says a noted legal expert.
U-V-A law professor Dick Howard says he believes the plan would actually
require a constitutional amendment.
Gilmore's legal experts contend it would NOT, because the state would be
picking up the tab, and there's nothing in Virginia's constitution that says
the person who owes the tax has to pay the bill.

Howard studied the issue at the request of local governments.
Gilmore wants to eliminate the personal property tax on most cars and
Passengers at Roanoke Regional Airport may help foot the bill for
improvements at Woodrum Field through a proposed ticket surcharge.
Today, the Regional Airport Commission voted to hire a consultant who will
help win approval from the Federal Aviation Administration.
The money must be spent on specific capital improvements, and the maximum
fee would be three dollars per passenger.
At current levels, that would generate about one million dollars a year.
Airport officials say the charge will help the airport remain
self-sufficient and protect against the loss of federal funds.

As police continue their search for a burglary suspect in Henry County,
another homeowner has confronted would-be burglars in his house.
It happened in Danville.
The burglars were not armed this time, but they beat up the homeowner, who
did NOT have a gun in his home.

The driver who picked up the suspect drove him to a gas station on 220
Investigators would like the driver to contact the Martinsville State Police.
There's a new team to cheer for in Pulaski--the minor league Rangers will
play in Calfee Park.
The Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce held a luncheon today honoring
players, coaches and staff.
Many in Pulaski are excited by the Appalachian League team, but some
residents who live near the ballfield don't want beer sold inside the park.
A hearing will be held by the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board before a
decision is made.

One day after being released by the Oakland Raiders; veteran quarterback
Jeff Hostetler has signed with the Washington Redskins.
Hos is coming in to washington as Gus Frerotte's back up. Hostetler
appeared in 13 games in 1996 completing 60 percent of his passes for 2
thousand, 548 yards and 23 touchdowns with 14 interceptions. Good stats; but
the Raiders were 7 and 9 and tied for last place in the AFC West.
One of high school baseball's talented young young coaches resigned today.
William Byrd's Rodney Spradlin stepped down as the Terriers head coach late

Spradlin lead the Terriers to the group 2A state championship June 10th in
a 6-3 win over Tabb. It's Byrd's first ever baseball state title. In 5 years as

Double A minor league baseball's Carolina Mudcats manager Marc Hill
resigned today to become an instructor for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Hillcats manager Jeff Bannister will replace Hill and become the sixth
manager in team history. The 32 year old Bannister has managed Lynchburg to a
94 and 104 record since taking the job at the beginning of the 1996 season.
Baltimore lost to the Montreal Expos 1-nothing this afternoon. If the O's

Eric Davis was released from John Hopkins Hospital after receiving surgery
for colon cancer. A hospital spokesperson says that Davis was with his family
and looked in good health. Davis is expected to make a full recovery. He's
heading home to California to recuperate.

During today's game against Montreal; Baltimore fans watched a message from
Davis on the big TV.
Jimmy Key did all he could to register his 12th win of the season, holding

The rubber match between the New York Mets and the New York Yankees was
won by the defending world champs.
