Traffic on Interstate 81 was tied-up for hours earlier this morning after a
It was carrying toluene -- (TOL-u-ene) a hazardous materials.
State police say the driver of the double tractor-trailer took his eyes off
the road to make a log notation.
He then lost control of the rig and smashed into the guardrail and turned
Rescue workers transported the driver and a passenger to Roanoke Memorial
Hospital with minor injuries.
The hazardous cargo did NOT leak from the tanker.
But a haz-mat team was called to the scene to clean up a diesel fuel leak
and supervise the removal of the toluene.
The northbound lanes of I-81 remained closed for more than five hours while
workers cleaned up the wreckage.
No other vehicles were involved.
Another crash involving two vehicles happened later in Campbell County.
Charges are pending against both parties involved.
State police say the driver of this pickup ran the stop sign near the
intersection of Routes 670 and 501.
He was struck by a southbound van carrying two adults and their infant
All four people were taken to Lynchburg General Hospital... police say the
parents will be charged for not restraining their child.
The pickup driver faces a charge of failing to yield the right of way.
There were no serious injuries reported.
A controversial Shuttle mission is a success so far.
Atlantis docked with the troubled Mir space station today, brining fresh
supplies, and another American astronaut who will join the Mir crew.

Some aids to Teamster's President Ron Carey say he knew about illegal union
contributions to his campaign.
Carey faces a new election because of the contribution, but has not been
barred from that election, because election officials had no proof he knew
about the illegal funds.
Today the New York Times reported that several of Carey's aids say he was
aware of a scheme to send union money to political groups, which in turn,
donated to Carey's campaign.
Carey's lawyer told the Times his client was not aware of the fundraising

After 53 years the United States government is finally recognizing a Roanoke
man for his heroism during World War Two.
Today Cecil Wingo received a Bronze Star.
The military recognized Wingo at the Army Reserve Center in Salem.
In September of 1944 his unit was ambushed.
He helped hold the enemy at bay.

A letter writing campaign by the Wingo family and Senator John Warner
brought Wingo's heroic job to the attention of the military.
The Bronze Star is given to soldiers who exhibit courage above and beyond

The Virginia-Carolina Craftsmen's Fall Classic is in town.

It was a tragic scene in Germany today.
Spectators were all set to watch a soccer game but during the pre-game show
a skydiver and two other people died.
The skydivers parachute failed to open during the exhibition.

Referee James knight collapsed after suffering a heart attack in the second
quarter of this afternoon's U-V-A Carolina game.
Knight is breathing on his own and listed in stable condition at Memorial
hospital in Chapel Hill. Trainers from both teams rushed to administer C-P-R
as Knight lay on the field.
Knight has referred in the A-C-C for 21 years.

race broke the fifty minute mark for the course.
Kenya's Peter Githucka (gi-THOO-ka)

second place finisher Ed Eyestone.
