American Rhododendron Society Plant Registry
Names and descriptions of new American varieties (clones) will be published after the requirements for registration are met. You are urged to submit proposed names to the A.R.S. Plant Registrar before they are actually used. There are thousands of names already in use and a name to be registered must not have been used before and must meet the requirements of the International Code of Nomenclature of Cultivated Plants - 1969. Requests to register names must be submitted with A.R.S. Plant Registration Cards (revised 1972), completed as fully as possible to the A.R.S. Plant Registrar, Edwin K. Parker, Astoria, OR. A $2.00 FEE IS CHARGED FOR EACH NAME REGISTERED, and should accompany the completed registration. Proposed names and descriptions will be checked by the A.R.S. Plant Registrar and then sent to the International Rhododendron Registrar for final approval and registration.

Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 4.7 cm.5.2 cm. across and long, with 5 wavy lobes (some slightly notched), deep yellowish-pink 5 R 6/11 to vivid red 5 R 5/13 (Nickerson), with strong red 5 R 4/12 inconspicuous spotting on upper 3 lobes. Calyx 5-lobed, hairy, 1 cm. Inflorescence 1-flowered. Free-flowering. Leaves 3 cm. x 1 cm., narrowly elliptic, acute, cuneate, glossy, with reddish hairs, moderate olive green 5 GY 4/3, under surface with reddish hairs. New growth reddish tan (from thick hairs). Leaves in winter purple grey green to bronze and retained well. Plant creeping, branching well, dense, irregularly mounding, 20 cm. tall x 90 cm. wide in 9 years. Blooms June 20July 15. Truss a ball, 4" x 4", with 10-12 flowers. Free-flowering. Leaves 2½" x 1", broadly elliptic, acute, cuneate, glabrous, copper-purple in fall, retained 2 years. Plant upright, broad, branching well, 3 ft. tall x 2 ft. wide in 7 years. Blooms early May. Hardy to -25° F.
BRUCE BRECHTBILL
: A bud sport of 'Unique'. Raised (1968) and introduced (1970) by Brechtbill's Nursery, Eugene, Or. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy lobes, pink, with some yellow in throat. Calyx ¼", medium green. Truss 5¾" across x 4" high, ball-shaped, of 10-12 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves 4" x 2", elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, glossy, moderate olive green 7.5 GY 4/4 (Nickerson), retained 3 years. Plant rounded, semi-dwarf, branching well, 4' x 4' in 10 years. Blooms late April - early May. Hardy to at least -5° F. Plant duplicates 'Unique' except for flower color.

: 'Britannia' x 'Romany Chat'. Raised by John Henny, Brooks, Or. and introduced (1968) by Henny & Wennekamp, Inc. Flowers widely funnel-campanulate, 2½" across x 2" long, with 5 slightly wavy lobes, crimson scarlet (similar to 'Britannia'). Calyx 1-2 mm., red, 5-lobed. Truss 10" across x 4" high, flat to lax, of 1215 flowers. Free-flowering. Leaves 6" x 2½" narrowly elliptic, acute, glaucous, with slight tan indumentum, retained 2 years. New growth pale green with fawn tomentum. Plant compact, low, spreading 4' tall x 6' wide in 10 years. Blooms late May-early June. Hardy to at least 0° F.

Flowers of very heavy substance, widely funnel-shaped, flat, 4½"-5" across x 1¾" long, with 7 wavy lobes, somewhat fragrant, moderate pink 5 R 8/6 to 2.5 R8/5 (Nickerson) shading light yellowish pink 2.5 YR 9/3 on 3 upper lobes, with small strong red 5 R 4/12 throat-marking, minimal speckling strong brown 2.5 YR 4/7 to moderate reddish brown 7.5 R 3/6. Slightly deeper color on outside of corolla. Calyx ¼", deep pink. Truss 7" across x 6" high compact, rounded, somewhat open at top, of 8-10 overlapping flowers. Free-flowering. Leaves 7" x 1½", mostly narrowly oblong, others slightly obovate, apiculate, cuneate, coriaceous, rather dull, medium to dark green, retained 1 year. Plant broad, branching well, 6' x 6' in 10 years. HELLO DOLLY

. Raised and introduced by Halfdan Lem, Seattle, Wa. Described and registered by James Elliott, Astoria, Or. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2¾" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy lobes, Porcelain Rose 620/1 (H.C.C.) blending to Naples Yellow 403 in throat, with a few light green spots in throat, fading to light yellow with age. Calyx 1½", inside Porcelain Rose, outside Naples Yellow. Truss about 6" across x 3" high, lax, 10-flowered. Free-flowering. Leaves 4" x 1¼", narrowly elliptic, acute, cuneate, glabrous, medium green, with light beige indumentum, revolute (particularly when plant in exposed site), retained 2 years. Plant rounded, branching well, 3' x 3' in 10 years. Blooms late April. Hardy at least to 0° F.

Flowers of heavy substance, tubular funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2" long, with 5 evenly rounded to slightly wavy lobes, Orpiment Orange 10/2 with Currant Red 821/2 throat, fading to Naples Yellow 403 but retaining throat color, with slight 2 rays of spots same color as throat extending toward outer edges of dorsal lobe. Anthers and stigma black. Calyx ½", Currant Red 821, fading. Truss 7" across x 4" high, lax, of 8-10 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves 3½" x elliptic, apiculate, cuneate; glabrous, medium green, retained 2 years. Plant rounded, branching well, 3½' x 3½' in 10 years. Blooms mid-May. Hardy to at least 0° F.

Calyx a rim, green, Truss 6" across x 5" high, flat, of 12-15 flowers. Free-flowering. Leaves 5¼" x 1½", narrowly elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, dark green, retained 4 years. ROSEY BALL

Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3 cm. across x 1.5 cm. long, with 5 wavy lobes, strong purplish pink 7.5 RP 7/10 (Nickerson) with strong red 2.5 R 5/12 spots. Calyx a rim, white scaly. Inflorescence a 10 cm. ball of up to 30 flowers, composed of several trusses of 6-8 flowers each. Leaves 7.5 cm. x 2.5 cm., narrowly elliptic, acute, cuneate, moderate olive green 5 GY 4/3 to dark yellowish green 2.5 G 3/3, glossy, brown scaly below, retained 2 years. : (Plant Patent 3048); Evergreen azalea. Bud sport of 'Hino Crimson'. Raised (1955) by C. M. Akehurst, Perry Hall, Md. and introduced by Akehurst Nurseries (1971). Buds Cardinal Red 822 (H.C.C.). Flowers of heavy substance, openly funnel-shaped, 1¼" across x 74" long, with 5 evenly-rounded lobes, Empire Rose 0621/1, some with Delft Rose 020/1 blotch. Calyx ¼", Empire Rose. Truss 2" across x 1½" high, ball-shaped, with 8 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves ¾" x ½", obovate (new leaves lanceolate), obtuse, cuneate, glossy, dark green, retained 2 years (well through winter and becoming rather red then). Blooms early to midseason. Hardy to at least -5° F. Plant duplicates 'Hino Crimson' except for bud and flower color.
VICTOR FREDRICK

Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 4"-5" across x 4"-5¼" long, with 5-7 wavy lobes, Red Group 44B (R. H. S. Colour Chart), with velvety blotch Red Group 46A on dorsal lobe and in ring around base of throat and with spots of same color on dorsal lobe, outside of corolla Red Group 44A with stripe Red Group 46A down center of each lobe. Truss 10" across x 8"-10" high, conical, of 17 flowers. Calyx ½", green. Leaves 8" x 4", mostly elliptic, others lanceolate, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, dark green, retained 3-4 years. Plant broad, branching well, somewhat decumbent, 68" tall x 94" wide in about 9 years. Blooms in May. Hardy to at least 5° F.
TONGA
: Deciduous azalea of unknown parents. Seed from New Zealand (1960). Raised by Warren Baldsiefen, Bellvale, N.Y. Flowers of heavy substance, widely funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2" long, with 5-7 frilled lobes, very fragrant, Dutch Vermillion 717 (H.C.C.), semi hose-in-hose. Truss dome-shaped, 5" across x 3" high, of 10 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves 2½" x 1", ovate, acute, cuneate to rounded. Plant broad, branching well, 3' tall x 2½' wide in 10 years. Blooms in early June. Hardy to -25° F.
WHITE VELVET

. Seed imported from Japan by Edgar Greer. Raised and introduced (1970-71) by Cyril H. Ward, Vancouver, WA. Buds pink. Flowers openly campanulate, 2" across x 15/8" long, with 5 wavy lobes, slightly fragrant, light pink fading to white with tan spots on upper lobe. Calyx minute, cream-colored. Truss 3½" across x 5" high, ball-shaped, with 16 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves 3" x 1", narrowly elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, somewhat glossy, dark green, with brownish tan indumentum, retained 3 years. New growth with frosty, greenish-white tomentum. Plant broad, dwarf, branching well with stiff, upright branches, 2' tall x 3' wide in 10 years. Blooms mid May. Hardy to at least -5° F.
WITCH DOCTOR
: ('Doncaster' x 'Nereid') x 'Vulcan'. Raised and introduced by Halfdan Lem, Seattle, WA. Described and registered by James Elliott, Astoria, Or. Flowers openly campanulate, 3" across x 1¼"-1½" long, with 5 wavy lobes, Cardinal Red 822/3 (H.C.C.), heavily spotted dark red on all lobes and on calyx. Calyx ¾"-1", Cardinal Red 822/3, of heavy substance, 5-lobed, held in one plane at right angle to pedical, lobes reflexed. Truss 6" across x 3" high, flat to lax, 6-flowered. Floriferous. Leaves 5" x 2", elliptic, acute, cuneate, glabrous, light green, retained 2 years. Plant upright, branching moderately, 3½' x 3½' in 10 years. Blooms mid-May. Hardy to at least 0° F.
