Color designations below refer to the Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 1966, unless otherwise stated. When R.H.S. Colour Chart (1966) numbers are used, the color names preceding these numbers are those of the Universal Color Language (ULC) or Inter-Society Color Council-National Bureau of Standards (ISCC-NBS).

The following list contains names of North American hybrids registered during the period February 1, 1987 through May 1, 1987.

'ALFREDA WIACZEK':  Lepidote. R. carolinianum x R. dauricum . Cross (1975), raised, named, introduced, and registered by C. David Lewis, Colts Neck, NJ. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 1⅝" across x 1" long, 6-12 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Strong reddish purple (78B) shading to white at center. Buds vivid reddish purple (74A) shading to white at base. No calyx. Ball-shaped truss, 2" across x 1" high, formed by 2-4 buds per terminal, 3 flowers per bud. Leaves 2" long x 1-1/16" wide, elliptic, acute, cuneate, with scaly indumentum; moderate olive green (146A) in summer, dark red (183A) in winter. Low growing, spreading habit, very floriferous, 2' high x 3' wide in 10 years from seed. Blooms mid April. Plant and bud hardy to at least -15F.

'ALICE SWIFT':  (Syn 'Pical #1'): Lepidote. ( R. mucronulatum x R. racemosum ) x R. carolinianum . Cross (c 1960), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Leon Yavorsky, Freehold, NJ. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 1" across x 1" long, 12-16 per truss, 5-lobed. Light reddish purple (74C) shading to moderate purplish pink (74D) in throat; vivid purplish red (66B) spotting dorsal lobe. Calyx c 1/32", pale yellow-green. Truss, 3" across x 2" high. Leaves 1⅝" to 2" long x " to 1" wide, elliptic, acute, cuneate, with scaly indumentum. Plant compact, well-branched, 42" high x 42" wide in 8 years from cutting. Blooms mid to late April. 'ANNA LOUISE GRASSI':  (Syn 'Anna Louise'): Evergreen azalea. (White seedling of unknown parentage) x 'Palestrina' (unregistered Vuyk hybrid). Cross (c 1965), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Leon Yavorsky, Freehold, NJ. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2" to 2" across x 1" to 1" long, 5-lobed, 1-3 per truss. Calyx c ", light green. Truss 3" across x 2" high. White with very faint light pink (50D) spotted flare dorsal lobe. Leaves 1" to 1⅛" long x ⅜" to " wide, elliptic to obovate, acute to mucronate, cuneate, hairy. Spreading plant habit, 15" high x 36" wide in 10 years from cutting. Blooms early May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -10F. (RHC CC 1986)

'BETTY CUMMINS':  Deciduous azalea. R. viscosum , collected wild, Old Bridge, NJ. Collected (1972), raised, named, introduced, and registered by C. David Lewis, Colts Neck, NJ. Flowers tubular funnel-shaped, 1⅜" across x 1" long, 9-12 per truss, 5-lobed, smooth-edged. Tube is 3/32" wide x 1" long. Strong purplish pink (73B) aging to very pale purple (73D) at mid-vein of each petal; tube is deep purplish pink (61D); buds are vivid purplish red (61C). Flowers very fragrant. No calyx. Flat truss, 4" across x 2 high. Leaves 1" long x " wide, mostly obovate, some elliptic, acute, cuneate, hairy. Plant upright, open habit, 3' high x 2' wide in 10 years from cutting. Blooms mid June. Plant and bud hardy to at least -15F.

'BILL MAGNESS':  Elepidote. R. macrophyllum , collected wild. Collected, raised, named, introduced, and registered by Britt M. Smith, Brittenhill Nursery, Kent, WA. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1" long, 20 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Yellowish white (155D), with light yellow green (154D) blotch and strong yellow green (145A) spotting dorsal lobe. Buds are yellowish white (158D). Calyx 1/16", yellow green (149D). Ball-shaped truss, 6" across x 5" high. Leaves 4" long x 1" wide, elliptic, convex, mucronate, oblique; upper surface dull, dark yellowish green (139A), underside moderate yellow green (148C), new growth strong greenish yellow (151A) with white tomentum. Plant rounded, well-branched, very floriferous, 4' high x 4' wide in 3 years after grafting. Blooms mid May. Hardy to at least 0F.

'CHEEKY':  Evergreen azalea. R. kiusianum x (hose-in-hose pink seedling of unknown parentage). Cross (c 1980), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Leon Yavorsky, Freehold, NJ. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 1" across x " long, 5-lobed, 2-4 per truss. Deep purplish pink (66C) shading to moderate purplish pink (65A) in throat. Calyx ⅛", light green. Truss 2" across x " high. Leaves " to 1" long x 7/16" to " wide, obovate, mucronate, cuneate. Plant 1' high x 1' wide in 6 years from seed. Blooms early to mid May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -10F. (RHS CC 1986)

'COUNTRY GIRL':  Evergreen azalea. 'Blaauw's Pink' x unknown seedling. Cross (c 1965), raised, introduced, and registered by Leon Yavorsky; named by Anna M. Gray, both Freehold, NJ. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, hose-in-hose, 1" to 1" across x 1" long, 5-lobed. Creamy white with irregular strong red (45D) margins and prominent vivid red (45A) flare in dorsal lobe. Buds are light pink tipped with deep yellowish pink (43C). Truss 3" across x 2" high. Leaves 1" to 1" long x " to ⅝" wide, obovate, apiculate, cuneate, somewhat hairy. Plant 34" high x 55" wide in 20 years from seed. Blooms early May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -10F. (RHS CC 1986)

'DEE DEE WEGENER':  Elepidote. 'Jingle Bells' x 'Mrs. Betty Robertson'. Cross (1974), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Britt M. Smith, Brittenhill Nursery, Kent, WA. Flowers openly campanulate (with large calyx), 3" across x 1" long, 8 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Broad picotee edge of deep red (53A) shading to pale yellow (8D), with pale yellow (20C) throat. Dorsal lobe has deep red (53A) blotch and spotting. Reverse is deep red (53A) to strong red (53D). Calyx 1", deep to strong red (53A to 53D). Lax truss, 6" across x 3" high. Leaves 4" long x 1" wide, narrowly elliptic, convex, acute, cuneate; upper surface dull, moderate olive green (147A), underside moderate yellow green (146D). Plant rounded, well-branched, very floriferous, 3' high x 3' wide in 11 years from seed. Blooms early May. Hardy to at least 6F.

'EDNA BEE':  (Syn 'Edna B.') Evergreen azalea. 'Elizabeth Gable' (unregistered Gable hybrid) x unnamed pink seedling. Cross (c 1965), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Leon Yavorsky, Freehold, NJ. Flowers flat saucer to very widely funnel-shaped, 2" to 3" across x 1" long, 5-lobed, 1-2 per terminal. Flowers are highly variable, being single, hose-in-nose, semi-double, and double. Calyx ", bright green. Deep purplish pink (61D) with strong purplish red (61B) blotch. Leaves 1" long x ⅜" wide, elliptic, acute, cuneate, hairy. Very dense plant habit, very floriferous, 30" high x 24" wide in 10 years from cutting. Blooms early to mid May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -10F. (RHS CC 1986)

'GRANDMA MATILDA':  (Syn 'Matilda'). Lepidote. 'Watchung' (unregistered sport of 'Ramapo') x R. carolinianum f. album . Cross (c 1966), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Leon Yavorsky, Freehold, NJ. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 1" across x ⅜" long, 2-5 per truss, 5-lobed. Light purple (82D). Calyx c 3/32", light green. Truss, 1" across x 1" high. Leaves c " long x ⅜" wide, elliptic, with scaly indumentum. Plant semi-dwarf, well-branched, 22" high x 20" wide in 12 years from cutting. Blooms early May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -10F. (RHS CC 1986)

'GRANDMA'S HAT':  Elepidote. Parentage unknown. Seedling obtained (1973) from Halfdan Lem, Seattle, WA. Presumed to be Lem cross, raised, named, introduced, and registered by Britt M. Smith, Brittenhill Nursery, Kent, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 4" across x 1" long, 18-20 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Greenish white (155C) with deep purplish red (71A) margins, c 3/16" wide; dark red (187A) blotch in dorsal lobe extending from center c " towards tip; dark red (187A) spotting upper three lobes. Reverse deep purplish red (71A); buds moderate purplish red (64A). Calyx 1/16" to 5/32", strong yellow green (143B) with purplish tips. Ball truss, 6" across x 6" high. Leaves 5" long x 1" wide, oblanceolate to lanceolate, flat, acute, cuneate; upper surface smooth, dull, dark yellowish green (139A), underside strong yellow green (144A). Plant upright, well-branched, very floriferous, 5' high x 4' wide in 10 years from cutting. Blooms late May. Hardy to at least 0F.

'HANNAH':  Lepidote. 'Rik' selfed. Cross (c 1978), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Leon Yavorsky, Freehold, NJ. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, " across x ⅜" long, 6-7 truss, 5-lobed. Yellowish white (155D) or white flushed light pink, with irregular edging of deep purplish pink (66C); pink coloration deepens slightly with age. Calyx c 1/32", very pale yellow green. Truss, 1" across x 1" high. Leaves 1" long x " wide, elliptic to ovate, obtuse to acute, cuneate, with scaly indumentum. Plant compact, well-branched, 10" high x 16" wide in 8 years from seed; free-flowering. Blooms early May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -10F. (RHS CC 1986)

'HAWAIIAN HOLIDAY':  Elepidote. 'Senorita' x 'Autumn Gold'. Cross (1970), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Britt M. Smith, Brittenhill Nursery, Kent, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 4" across x 2" long, 10-12 per truss, 7-lobed, wavy margins. Light purplish pink (55C) at margins, shading continuously to light yellow (14D) at center. Dark red (183A) blotch above center; solid at center, then divided by lines of light orange yellow (22D), diminishing outwardly to spots. Calyx ", color same as flower. Ball truss, 8" across x 6" high. Leaves 5" long x 2" wide, lanceolate, apiculate, cuneate; upper surface smooth, moderate olive green (137A), underside moderate yellow green (147C). Plant rounded, moderately branched, 5' high x 4' wide in 15 years from seed. Blooms early May. Hardy to at least 0F.

'JACK SWIFT':  Elepidote. ( R. catawbiense x 'Mars') selfed. Cross (c 1965), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Leon Yavorsky, Freehold, NJ. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2" long, 18 per truss, 5-lobed, smooth-edged. Vivid purplish red (57D) with pale yellow (12D) center. Calyx c 1/16", light green. Ball-shaped truss, 6" across x 6" high. Leaves 5" to 6" long x 2" to 2" wide, elliptic, flat, acute, cuneate, dull, smooth. Plant 5' high x 7' wide in 23 years from seed. Blooms mid to late May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -10F. (RHS CC 1986)

'JAY MURRAY':  Lepidote. R. carolinianum x R. mucronulatum 'Pink Panther'. Cross (1972), raised, named, introduced, and registered by C. David Lewis, Colts Neck, NJ. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1" long, 4-6 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Light purplish pink (62C) with brownish orange (164A) spotting in dorsal lobe. Buds are moderate purplish red (70A). Calyx 1/16", strong yellow green (145A). Ball-shaped truss, 3" across x 2" high. Leaves 2" long x 1" wide, elliptic, flat, acute, cuneate, with scaly indumentum. Plant upright, very floriferous, 5' high x 5' wide in 13 years from seed. Blooms late April. Plant and bud hardy to at least -15F.

'LEONORE FRANCES':  Vireya. ( R. macgregoriae x R. aurigeranum ) x 'Dr. Herman Sleumer'. Cross (1972), raised, named, and registered by Peter Sullivan, San Francisco, CA; introduced by William A. Moynier, Los Angeles, CA, and Peter Sullivan. Flowers tubular funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1" long, (" long tube opens abruptly to the petals), 12-14 per truss, 5-lobed, evenly rounded margins. Bright cherry pink with cream throat. No calyx. Dome-shaped truss, 6" across x 4" high. Leaves 3" long x 1" wide, elliptic, acute, cuneate; upper surface smooth, dull, medium green; under surface lighter green with tiny scales. Upright, slightly open habit, moderately fragrant, quite floriferous, 40" high x 33" wide in 11 years from seed. Blooms February through March. Hardy to at least 30F. (Color Chart not used.)

'LEON'S AMY':  (Syn 'Amy'). Evergreen azalea. 'Elizabeth Gable' (unregistered Gable hybrid) x unnamed pink seedling. Cross (c 1965), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Leon Yavorsky, Freehold, NJ. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, double (some semi-double), 2" across x 1" long, 5-lobed, 2-3 per truss. Calyx c 1/16", green. Truss 3" across x 2" high. Moderate purplish pink (68C) with some strong purplish red (63B) spotting on dorsal lobe. Leaves 1" to 1⅛" long x ⅜" to 7/16" wide, elliptic, glossy. Compact plant habit, well-branched, 21" high x 24" wide in 8 years from cutting. Blooms early to mid May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -10F. (RHS CC 1986)

'LEON'S RHEBA':  (Syn 'Pical #6'). Lepidote. ( R. mucronulatum x R. racemosum ) x R. carolinianum . Cross (c 1960), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Leon Yavorsky, Freehold, NJ. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 1⅝" across x 1" long, 6-10 per truss, 5-lobed. Light reddish purple (74C) shading to moderate purplish pink (74D) and then aging to nearly white in throat; some vivid purplish red (74A) spotting on dorsal lobe. Calyx c 1/32", green. Truss, 3" across x 2" high. Leaves 2" long x 1" wide, elliptic, acute, cuneate, with scaly indumentum. Plant well-branched, 5' high x 4' wide in 10 years from cutting. Blooms late April to early May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -10F. (RHS CC 1986)

'LEON'S TOBY':  Evergreen azalea. (Purple seedling of unknown parentage) x 'Hahn's Red' (unregistered Kurume). Cross (c 1978), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Leon Yavorsky, Freehold, NJ. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1" long, 5-lobed, 2-5 per truss. Calyx ", green. Truss 3" wide x 3" high. Strong red (53C). Color does not fade with age. Leaves 1⅜" long x " wide, obovate, mucronate, cuneate. Plant 24" high x 20" wide in 8 years from seed. Blooms early May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -10F. (RHS CC 1986)

'LEON'S WHIMSY':  Evergreen azalea. 'Edna Bee' x (seedling of unknown parentage). Cross (c 1978), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Leon Yavorsky, Freehold, NJ. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, semi-double (1 to 5 petaloid stamens), 2" across x 1" long, 5-lobed, 2-4 per truss. Calyx ⅛", light green. Truss 3" wide x 1" high. Vivid reddish orange (44C) with some strong red (46A) spotting dorsal lobe. Leaves 1⅜" to 1" long x ⅝" to " wide, obovate to elliptic. Plant 16" high x 16" wide in 8 years from seed. Blooms early May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -10F. (RHS CC 1986)

'LINDA STUART':  Evergreen azalea. 'Blaauw's Pink' x unknown seedling. Cross (c 1965), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Leon Yavorsky, Freehold, NJ. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, hose-in-hose, 1" across x 1" long, 5-lobed. Creamy white with irregular deep yellowish pink (43C) edging. Buds are vivid reddish orange (43B) and deep yellowish pink (43C) with lighter streaks. Truss 3" across x 1" high. Leaves 1" long x 1" wide, obovate, mucronate, cuneate, somewhat hairy. Plant 3' high x 3' wide in 20 years from seed. Blooms early to mid May. Plant and bud hardy to at least -10F. (RHS CC 1986)

'RIK':  Lepidote. R. racemosum x R. keiskei . Cross (c 1970), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Leon Yavorsky, Freehold, NJ. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, ⅞" across x " long, 10-18 per truss, 5-lobed. Yellowish white (155D) or white flushed light pink, with irregular edging of deep purplish pink (66C); irregular stripes deep purplish pjnk (66C) on reverse; prominent curved style, pink or white 1" long. Calyx c 1/32", pale yellow-green. Truss, 2" to 2" across x " high. Leaves 1" long x " wide, elliptic, acute, cuneate, with scaly indumentum. Plant semi-dwarf, dense mound, 25" high x 44" wide in c 15 years from seed; Tree-flowering; winter foliage and stems are red. Blooms late April. Plant and bud hardy to at least -10F. (RHS CC 1986)

'ROBERTA GAUVREAU':  Elepidote. 'A. Bedford' x ('Mars' x 'Catawbiense Album'). Cross (c 1974), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Leon Yavorsky, Freehold, NJ. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2⅝" across x 1" long, 12-16 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Strong purplish red (63B) aging to pale purplish pink (62D), with moderate purplish red (64A) blotch. Calyx c 1/32", very light green. Ball-shaped truss, 5" across x 4" high. Leaves 4" to 5" long x 2" to 2⅜" wide, elliptic, flat, acute, cuneate, dull, smooth. Plant upright, semi-open, 40" high x 40" wide in 12 years from seed. Blooms late May. Plant and bud hardy to at least-10F. (RHS CC 1986)

'SEVEN DEVILS':  Elepidote. R. macrophyllum , collected wild. Collected, raised, named, introduced, and registered by Britt M. Smith, Brittenhill Nursery, Kent, WA. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1" long, 14 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Deep purplish red (59B) with deep purplish pink (70C) throat and grayish brown (166A) dorsal spotting extending from ovary to c ⅓" from edge of petal, and with small projections into adjacent lobes. Reverse is deep purplish red (61A). Calyx ⅛", moderate purplish red (59C). Dome-shaped truss, 5 across x 5" high. Leaves 5" long x 2" wide, narrowly elliptic, revolute, mucronate, oblique; upper surface dull, moderate olive green (137A), underside moderate yellow green (146C), new growth deep greenish yellow (153A) covered with tan tomentum. Plant rounded, well-branched, very floriferous, 4' high x 4' wide in 8 years after grafting. Blooms mid May. Hardy to at least 0F.

'SIERRA GLOW':  Evergreen azalea. (Purple seedling of unknown parentage) x 'Hahn's Red' (unregistered Kurume). Cross (c 1978), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Leon Yavorsky, Freehold, NJ. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1" long, 5-lobed, 3-12 per truss, with a few petaloid stamens, " long x ⅜" wide. Calyx c ", light green. Truss 3" across x 2" high. Vivid purplish red (61C) with some vivid red (57A) spotting on dorsal lobe. Leaves 1" long x " wide, obovate, mucronate, cuneate. Plant 16" high x 16" wide in 8 years from seed. Blooms early May. 'VIRGINIA DELITO':  (Syn 'Pical #2'). Lepidote. ( R. mucronulatum x R. racemosum ) x R carolinianum . Cross (c 1960), raised, introduced, and registered by Leon Yavorsky; named by Jack Bastedo, both Freehold, NJ. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 1" across x 1" long, 2-3 per truss, 5-lobed. Strong to moderate purplish pink (68B-68C) with slight spotting vivid purplish red (66B) on dorsal lobe. Calyx c 1/32", light green. Truss, 2" to 3" across x 1" high. Leaves 2" to 2⅞" long x ⅞" to 1⅜" wide, elliptic, acute, cuneate, with scaly indumentum. Plant upright, open habit, 6' high x 4' wide in 15 years from cutting. Blooms mid to late April. Plant and bud hardy to at least-10F. (RHS CC 1986)

'WHITE FELICITY':  Lepidote. ( R carolinianum x R. dauricum f. album ' Arctic Pearl') x R. dauricum f. album 'Arctic Pearl'. Cross (c 1976), raised, named, introduced, and registered by Donald W. Paden, Urbana, IL. Flowers widely funnel campanulate, 1" across x 1" long, as many as 9 per truss, 5-lobed, wavy margins. Flowers are pure white except for yellow anthers. Calyx 3/16", green. Ball-shaped truss, 4" across x 3' high. Leaves 1" long x " wide, elliptic, flat, acute, cuneate, with scaly indumentum. Plant upright, 3' high x 2' wide in 9 years from seed. Blooms April to mid May. Plant hardy to at least -25F, bud hardy to at least -15F. (Color Chart not used.)
