JARS v45n3 - American Rhododendron Society Plant Registry

American Rhododendron Society Plant Registry

Rhododendron and azalea breeders and growers are encouraged to register the names of plants before distributing them either commercially or privately. Registration ensures that each clone is given a name which is unique, thus avoiding confusion with other clones. A further benefit is that plant descriptions and histories are recorded in permanent files. The information in these records is accessible to anyone who requests it.
The Royal Horticultural Society is the International Registration Authority for the genus Rhododendron . The ARS, serving as North American representative to the RHS, screens names to determine whether they conform to the recommendations of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants - 1980 , and whether they are available for use. The ARS also prepares registration applications in the form required by the RHS, forwards certificates to registrants, publishes plant names and descriptions, and maintains permanent plant records.
Questions concerning name registration, the availability of particular names, and requests for forms should be directed to the ARS Registrar, Mrs Jay W Murray. There is no longer a fee for non-certificate registration; certificates, if desired, may be purchased for $2.00 each.
Registrations have been completed for the following plant names during the period February 16, 1991 through May 15, 1991. Country of origin is reported for names registered by members who live outside of North America. Parents of the clones are listed in the conventional order: (seed parent x pollen parent). Descriptions will be published in the Spring 1992 issue of the Journal ARS .
