American Rhododendron Society Plant Registry

The following rhododendron and azalea names, submitted through the North American registrar, were approved and added to the International Rhododendron Register prior to August 1, 2000 by the Royal Horticultural Society, International Registration Authority for the genus Rhododendron . Names conform to the rules and recommendations of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants - 1995 .

Color numbers refer to the RHS Colour Chart unless noted otherwise. Accompanying color names are taken from A Contribution toward Standardization of Color Names in Horticulture , R.D. Huse and K.L. Kelly, edited by D.H. Voss (ARS, 1984).

Parents of a plant are reported in the conventional order: (seed parent x pollen parent). Abbreviations are used where appropriate: H = hybridized by, G = grown to first flower by, R = raised by, S = selected by, N = named by, I = introduced by, REG = registered by; dates are enclosed in parentheses immediately following the activity.

Metric conversions of flower and leaf measurements are reported in 5mm (0.2") increments for dimensions greater than 25mm (1").

'Alexandra's Ruby': Elepidote. ('Mars' x 'Inca Chief'). H (1986), G (1992), N, and REG (2000): J. Leonard, Sandwich, MA. Fls 15/ball truss, openly funnel-shaped, 2" (50mm) long x 3" (75mm) wide, 5 wavy-edged lobes; deep red (53A); anthers white. Calyx c 0.1" (3mm) long, grayish yellow green (148D) with strong red (53B). Truss 6" (150mm) high x 6" (150mm) wide. Lvs held 3 years, 3"-6" (75-150mm) x 1.25"-2.5" (30-65mm), elliptic, obtuse apex, rounded base, flat margins; dull, moderate olive green (146A) and wrinkled above, hairless. Shrub 6' (1.8m) tall x 8' (2.4m) wide in 12 years. Plant and bud hardy to at least -10°F (-23°C). Late May-early June.

'Alva': Elepidote. ( hemsleyanum x yakushimanum 'Koichiro Wada'). H (1963), G (1973), N, and REG (2000): D.W. Goheen, Camas, WA; I (c 1980): L. Bulgin, Salem, OR. Fls 14-16/ dome truss, openly funnel-shaped, 2.5" (65mm) long x 3.5"-4" (90-100mm) wide, 7 wavy to frilly-edged lobes; white tinged green-yellow in bud, opening yellowish white (155B, 155D) throughout, unmarked; strongly scented. Calyx minute, pale green and rose. Truss 6" (150mm) high x 8" (200mm) wide. Lvs held 3 years, 5" (125mm) x 2.5" (65mm), obovate, flat, mucronate apex, rounded base; glossy green above, with a thin, felted indumentum below, white to tan at first, deep orange yellow (163A) at maturity. Shrub 5' (1.5m) tall x 6' (1.8m) wide in 10 years. Plant and bud hardy to at least 5°F (-15°C). May.

'Amy Cotta': Lepidote. (sport from PJM Group). S (1982), G (1984), N (1997), and REG (2000): Steve Cotta, Tiverton, RI; I (1998): Portsmouth Nursery, Portsmouth, RI. Fls 12-15/dome truss, broadly funnel-shaped, 1" (25mm) long x 1.8" (45mm) wide, 5 wavy-edged lobes; light purple (75A) in bud, opening inside very pale purple (75D), shading to white in throat; outside light, very light, and very pale purple (75A-D). Calyx 0.4" (10mm) long, strong yellow green (144A). Truss 2" (50mm) high x 3.2" (80mm) wide. Lvs held 2 years, 1.3" (32mm) x 0.7" (17.5mm), elliptic or sometimes obovate, cuneate to somewhat rounded base, obtuse or slightly retuse apex, down curved margins; semi-glossy, darker than moderate olive green (147A) above, with tiny scales, tan above, rusty brown and more numerous below. Shrub 3.5' (1.1m) tall x 5.2' (1.6m) wide in 18 years, compact, dense habit, slow-growing. Plant hardy to at least -20°F (-29°C). Mid April. (US Plant Patent 11311)

'Bill Vinson': Elepidote. ('Point Defiance' x 'Countess of Derby'). H (1973): Bill Vinson, Sumner, WA; G (c1981), N, and REG (2000): E.T. (Ted) Anderson, Longview, WA. Fls 11-15/conical truss, open funnel-campanulate, 4" (100mm) long x 2.5" (65mm) wide, 5 wavy-edged lobes; strong red (53B) in bud, opening inside strong purplish red (58B) at margins, paling to strong purplish red (58C) at center; outside strong purplish red (58B), fading a little lighter; stigma vivid red (46C). Calyx rim-like, strong purplish red (58B). Truss 7" (175mm) high x 7" (175mm) wide. Lvs held 2 years, 6"-7" (150-175mm) x 2.25"-2.75" (55-70mm), elliptic, broadly acute and slightly wavy apex, cuneate base; dull, moderate olive green (137A) above, hairless. 'Black Diamond': Elepidote. ('Lord Roberts' x 'Cowboy Joe'). H (1991): Morna Stockman; G (1999), N (1999), and REG (2000): Harold and Morna Stockman, Port Angeles, WA. Fls 20-26/ conical truss, openly funnel-shaped, 1.5" (40mm) long x 2.25" (55mm) wide, 5 flat-edged lobes; (no good color match) near strong purplish red (63A-B, 67A) inside and out, with a prominent dorsal blotch of black spots, and with pale yellow stamens. Calyx 0.1" (3mm) long, tan tinged red. Truss 7" (175mm) high x 6" (150mm) wide. Lvs held 2 years, 5.75" (145mm) x 1.75" (45mm), narrowly elliptic, acuminate apex, cuneate base, flat and down curved margins; glossy, dark green above, hairless. Shrub 2.7' (0.8m) tall x 2' (0.6m) wide in 9 years, intermediate habit. Plant and bud hardy to at least 10°F (-12°C). Late May.

'Boing Boeing': Elepidote. ('Dianta' x 'Kubla Khan'). H (1993): Morna Stockman; G (1999), N (2000), and REG (2000): Harold and Morna Stockman, Port Angeles, WA. Fls 8-10/ball truss, funnel-campanulate, 2" (50mm) long x 3.25" (80mm) wide, 5 wavy-edged lobes; strong red (53C-D) in bud, opening inside strong to light purplish pink (73B-C) at margins, with a large star-shaped white center, brilliant to light yellow (15C-D) areas on three dorsal lobes, and dense spotting of strong red (53C) in dorsal throat; outside deep to strong purplish pink (73A-B). Calyx 0.25" (6mm) long, green edged yellow. Truss 5" (125mm) high x 5" (125mm) wide. Lvs 4.25" (105mm) x 1.75" (45mm), elliptic, broadly acute apex, rounded base, flat and down curved margins; dull, mid green above, hairless. 'Border Jewel': Evergreen azalea. ('Chinzan' x 'Marian Lee'). H (1994), G (1995), N, and REG (2000): Mark Phillips, Cary, NC. Fls 4-5/lax truss, funnel-shaped, 1" (25mm) long x 1.5" (40mm) wide; buds rose pink with a white base, opening pastel pink with a rose pink picotee edge inside and out, the center and base light pastel pink, unmarked; anthers white; stigma red. Calyx c 0.06" (1.5mm) long, light green. Lvs 1" (25mm) x 0.5" (13mm), elliptic, acute apex, cuneate base, flat and down curved margins; glossy dark green above, hairless. Shrub 3' (0.9m) tall x 2' (0.6m) wide in 5 years, dense habit. Plant and bud hardy to at least 3°F (-16°C). Mid May.

'Brim's Heartburn': Elepidote. ('Parker's Pink' x Avocet Group). H (1995): J. Delbert Brim, Mount Airy, NC; G (1999), N (2000), and REG (2000): Marilyn and Bud Whitman, Wall, NJ. Fls 18/dome truss, broadly funnel-shaped, 2.5" (65mm) long x 4" (100mm) wide, 7 wavy-edged lobes; deep purplish pink (66C) in bud, opening light purplish pink (73C) at edges, fading to pale pinkish white, with a small orange-brown flare in throat of dorsal lobe, spreading as light greenish yellow (8C) rays on three dorsal lobes; outside light purplish pink (73C) flushed with deep purplish pink (66C). Truss 5" (125mm) high x 6" (150mm) wide. Lvs 8" (200mm) x 2.5" (65mm), narrowly elliptic, broadly acute apex, cuneate base, flat margins; dull, near moderate olive green (137A) above, mid vein strong yellow green (144B), hairless. 'Bronzed Beauty': Elepidote. (unnamed Lem hybrid x falconeri ssp. eximium ). H (1986), G (1991), N (1998), and REG (2000): Catherine Weeks; I (1997): Westgate Garden Nursery; both Eureka, CA. Fls 15/slightly lax dome truss, openly funnel-shaped, 2.25" (55mm) long x 3.5" (90mm) wide, 7 wavy-edged lobes; light yellow (12C) in bud, opening pale yellow (11C) inside and out, unmarked; moderately scented. Truss 5" (125mm) high x 8" (200mm) wide. Lvs held 2 years, 5.5" (140mm) x 2" (50mm), elliptic, acute apex, cuneate base, slightly upcurved margins; glossy, new foliage dark red (187A), with color persisting for 4-5 months before changing to dark yellowish green (139A) above, moderate yellow green (139D) below, hairless. Shrub 4' (1.2m) tall x 4.5' (1.4m) wide in 12 years, intermediate to dense habit. Plant and bud hardy to at least 11°F (-12°C). Early April.

'Butterscotch Dancer': Elepidote. ('Sunstruck' x 'Skipper'). H (1993), G (1998), N, and REG (2000): J. Leonard, Sandwich, MA. Fls 10-11/dome truss, openly funnel-shaped, 2.75" (70mm) long x 4" (100mm) wide, 7 flat-edged lobes; peach-colored buds opening pale yellow (20D) at margins, shading to pale greenish yellow (10D) in center, with a strong red (46A) basal blotch extending upwards 1.25" (30mm) on dorsal lobe, lesser lengths on other lobes; moderately scented. Calyx c 0.1" (3mm) long, strong yellow green (144B). Truss 4.5" (11.5mm) high x 7" (1 75mm) wide. Lvs held 2 years, 3"-7.5" (75-190mm) x 1.25"-2.25" (30-55mm), elliptic, apiculate apex, cuneate base, flat margins; dull, moderate yellow green (146B) above, hairless. Shrub 3' (0.9m) tall x 2.5' (0.75m) wide in 7 years. Plant and bud hardy to at least -5°F (-21°C). Late May-early June.

'Canadian Sunshine': Elepidote. (Parentage unknown). H (pre 1989): A.W. Smith, Niagara Falls, Ontario; G (1997), N (2000), and REG (2000): Doug Irish-Hosier, North East, PA. Fls 14/ball truss, funnel-shaped, 1.5" (40mm) long x 2.75" (70mm) wide, 7 wavy-edged lobes; yellow flushed reddish in bud, opening inside light greenish yellow (3D), unmarked; outside light greenish yellow (3C). Truss 5" (125mm) high x 5" (125mm) wide. Lvs 5.5" (140mm) x 2" (50mm), held 3 years, elliptic, acute to broadly acute apex, oblique base, down curved margins, impressed veins; glossy, moderate olive green (147A) above, hairless. Shrub 2' (0.6m) tall x 2.5' (0.75m) wide in c 12 years, intermediate habit. Plant and bud hardy to at least -23°F (-31°C). Mid May.

'Carolina Babe': Elepidote. ('Gladsgay Gardens'* x 'Governor's Mansion'). H (1995): Marilyn Whitman; G (2000), N (2000), and REG (2000): Marilyn and Bud Whitman, Wall, NJ. Fls 16-18/ conical truss, broadly funnel-shaped, 2" (50mm) long x 3.5" (90mm) wide, 7 frilly-edged lobes; light purple (78C) in bud, opening moderate purplish pink (78D) inside and out, the inside fading to white; strong yellow green (144C) spotting on dorsal lobes. Truss 6.5" (165mm) high x 6.5" (165mm) wide. Lvs 5.5" (140mm) x 3" (75mm), oblong, broadly acute apex, cuneate base, flat margins; dull, moderate olive green (137A) above, hairless. 'Carolina Dream Girl': Elepidote. ('Gladsgay Gardens'* x 'Governor's Mansion'). H (1995): Marilyn Whitman; G (2000), N (2000), and REG (2000): Marilyn and Bud Whitman, Wall, NJ. Fls 18/conical truss, broadly funnel-shaped, 2.5" (65mm) long x 3.75" (95mm) wide, 6-7 flat-edged lobes; deep purple (79C) and light purple (78C) in bud, opening inside white, faintly tinged lavender at first, with deep purplish red (61A) markings at base of dorsal lobes; outside white with pale lavender midribs; pistil green. Truss 6.5" (165mm) high x 7" (175mm) wide. Lvs 7.25" (180mm) x 3" (75mm), oblong, broadly acute apex, rounded base, flat margins; dull, moderate olive green (137A) above, hairless. 'Chalk Leopard': Elepidote. ('Mrs. T.H. Lowinsky' x 'Calsap'). H (pre 1989): A.W. Smith, Niagara Falls, Ontario; G (1997), N (2000), and REG (2000): Doug Irish-Hosier, North East, PA. Fls 18/dome truss, openly funnel-shaped, 1.75" (45mm) long x 2.5" (65mm) wide, 5 wavy-edged lobes; inside white, faintly flushed palest lavender at first, with a large, densely spotted, maroon blotch on the dorsal lobe; outside very pale purple (69C). Truss 4" (100mm) high x 6" (150mm) wide. Lvs 3" (75mm) x 1.5" (40mm), elliptic, broadly acute apex, cuneate base, down curved margins; dark yellowish green (139A) above, hairless. 'Chitwood': Elepidote. ('Hotei' x 'Van Nes Sensation'). H (1990): Morna Stockman; G (1997), N (1999), and REG (2000): Harold and Morna Stockman, Port Angeles, WA. Fls 13-16/ball truss, broadly funnel-shaped, 2.25" (55mm) long x 3.25" (80mm) wide, 6 wavy-edged lobes; buds brilliant yellow (11A) at base, shading paler towards apex, opening inside white with a brilliant to light yellow (11A-B) center and solid color flares on two dorsal lobes; outside white with a light yellow (11B) base. Calyx c 0.25" (5mm) long, yellow. Truss 5" (125mm) high x 5.5" (140mm) wide. Lvs held 2 years, 4.75" (120mm) x 1.75" (45mm), oblong, broadly acute apex, cordate base, flat and down curved margins; dull, dark green above, hairless. 'Clyde Wesche': Elepidote. ('Lem's Cameo' x 'Sierra del Oro'). H (1995), G (1998), N (1999), and REG (2000): W.A. Stipe, Greenbank, WA. Fls 15/ball truss, funnel-campanulate, 2" (50mm) long x 3" (75mm) wide, 6 wavy-edged lobes; strong red (51A) in bud, opening inside moderate purplish pink (54D) at edge, shading to a light orange (29B) throat, with a small, deep pink (50B) basal blotch; outside light pink (50D). Calyx 0.5" (13mm) long, deep yellowish pink (39B). Truss 6" (150mm) high x 6" (150mm) wide. Lvs held 2 years, 2.5" (65mm) x 1.25"(30mm), elliptic, broadly acute apex, rounded base, flat margins; dull, moderate yellow green (147A) above, hairless. Shrub 1.7' (0.5m) tall x 1.25' (0.4m) wide in 4 years, intermediate habit. Plant and bud hardy to at least 14°F (-10°C). Midseason.

'Dapper Dan': Elepidote. ( yakushimanum x unknown). H (c 1989): unknown; G, N, and REG (2000): Marilyn and Bud Whitman, Wall, NJ. Fls 14/dome truss, funnel-shaped, 1.75" (45mm) long x 2.5" (65mm) wide, 5-6 wavy-edged lobes; vivid purplish red (57B) in bud, opening inside white with (57B) markings and some vivid yellow green (154A) spotting on dorsal lobe; outside white with vivid purplish red (57B) midribs and a light purplish pink (63D) base. Truss 4.5" (115mm) high x 6" (150mm) wide. Lvs 4.5" (115mm) x 1.5" (40mm), elliptic, broadly acute apex, rounded base, flat margins; dull, moderate olive green (137A) above, with a thick, hairy, light tan indumentum below. Fls9/dome truss, funnel-campanulate, 2" (50mm) long x 3.25" (80mm) wide, 5 wavy-edged lobes; strong purplish red (67A) in bud, opening inside very light purple (75C) with a strong greenish yellow (151A) dorsal blotch; outside light purple (75A) edged moderate purplish pink (74B). Truss 5" (125mm) high x 6" (150mm) wide. Lvs 5.25" (130mm) x 2.5" (65mm), elliptic, obtuse apex, cordate base, flat margins; semi-glossy, near moderate olive green (147A) above, hairless. Shrub 2.25 (0.7m) tall x 2.5' (0.75m) wide in 9 years, intermediate habit. Plant hardy to at least -15°F (-26°C); buds, -10°F (-23°C). Mid April.

'Etamin': Elepidote. ('Kubla Khan' x 'Christie Ess'). H (1990): Morna Stockman; G (1998), N (1999), and REG (2000): Harold and Morna Stockman, Port Angeles, WA. Fls 7/lax dome truss, funnel-campanulate, 2.5" (65mm) long x 4" (100mm) wide, 7 wavy-edged lobes; moderate red (47A) in bud, opening deep yellowish pink (39B) at margins, vivid yellow (15A-B) in center of lobes and throat, and with discrete spotting of moderate red (47A) on dorsal lobes; outside strong reddish orange (42B-C) fading to deep yellowish pink (39B). Calyx cup-shaped, tapering from 1" to 0.2" (25-5mm), reddish at edge shading to yellow base. Truss 5" (125mm) high x 7" (175mm) wide. Lvs held 2 years, 6" (150mm) x 2" (50mm), narrowly elliptic, broadly acute apex, cuneate base, down curved margins; dull, dark green above, hairless. Shrub 3.3' (1.0m) tall x 4' (1.2m) wide in 10 years, intermediate habit. Plant and bud hardy to at least 10°F (-12°C). Mid May.

'Ethel Kirkpatrick': Elepidote. ('Lem's Cameo' x 'Ken Janeck'). H (1985): unknown; G (1996), N, and REG (2000): E.T. (Ted) Anderson, Longview, WA. Fls14/dome truss, openly funnel-shaped, 2.25" (55mm) long x 3"-3.5" (75-90mm) wide, 5 wavy-and frilly-edged lobes; vivid red (57A) in bud, opening inside vivid purplish red (57C) at edge, shading lighter through vivid purplish red (57D) to approximately pale purplish pink (62D) at center, with a V-shaped, moderate red (185B) densely spotted blotch in the dorsal throat and sparser spotting towards the edge; outside vivid purplish red (57C), streaked with strong purplish red (58B) on midribs. Calyx c 0.1" (3mm) long, vivid purplish red (58C). Truss 6" (150mm) high x 6" (150mm) wide. Lvs held 2 years, 3"-6" (75-150mm) x 1"-2" (25-50mm), narrowly elliptic, broadly acute apex, rounded base, down curved margins; dull, moderate olive green (147A) above, hairless. 'Flavone': Elepidote. ('Neat-O' x bureavii ). H (1979), G (1988), N, and REG (2000): D.W. Goheen, Camas, WA; I: A Sandy Rhododendron, Sandy, OR. Fls 16-20/conical truss, broadly funnel-campanulate, 2" (50mm) long x 2"-2.5" (50-65mm) wide, 5 wavy-edged lobes; white, with strong purplish red (54A) spotting on dorsal lobe. Calyx 2-3mm long, pale pink. Truss 5"-6" (125-150mm) high x 5"-6" (125-150mm) wide. Lvs held 3 years, 5"-5.25" (125-130mm) x 2.5" (65mm), elliptic, apiculate apex, cuneate base, flat to down curved wavy margins; glossy and dark green above, with a thick, felted, moderate orange (167A) indumentum below. Shrub 5' (1.5m) tall x 5' (1.5m) wide in 15 years, dense habit. Plant and bud hardy to at least 5°F (-15°C). April.

'Frill City': Elepidote. ('Ben Moseley' x 'Francesca'). H (pre 1989): A.W. Smith, Niagara Falls, Ontario; G (1999), N (2000), and REG (2000): Doug Irish-Hosier, North East, PA. Fls 14/dome truss, broadly funnel-shaped, 2" (50mm) long x 3" (75mm) wide, 6 frilly-edged lobes; inside moderate purplish pink (74D), edged light reddish purple (74C), with inconspicuous ocher spotting on dorsal lobe; outside vivid and light reddish purple(74B-C). Truss 5" (125mm) high x 5" (125mm) wide. Lvs 4.75" (120mm) x 2.5" (65mm), elliptic, broadly acute apex, cuneate/rounded base, down curved margins; semi-glossy, moderate olive green (147A) above, hairless. Shrub 4' (1.2m) tall x 4' (1.2m) wide in c 12 years, intermediate habit. Plant and bud hardy to at least -23°F (-31°C). Early June.

'Frill Seeker': Elepidote. (unknown x 'Bob As'). H (pre 1989): A.W. Smith, Niagara Falls, Ontario; C (1998), N (2000), and REG (2000): Doug Irish-Hosier, North East, PA. Fls 19/dome truss, broadly funnel-shaped, 2" (50mm) long x 3" (75mm) wide, 5 wavy-edged lobes; inside moderate purplish pink (74D) at margins, shading to very pale purple (75D) center, with a spotted green blotch on the dorsal lobe; outside vivid reddish purple (74B) fading to light reddish purple (74C). Truss 5" (125mm) high x 5" (125mm) wide. Lvs 4.5" (115mm) x 2" (50mm), elliptic, broadly acute apex, cuneate base, down curved margins; semi-glossy, mid green above, with a reddish brown hairy indumentum below. Shrub 4' (1.2m) tall x 4' (1.2m) wide in c 12 years, intermediate habit. Plant and bud hardy to at least -23°F (-31°C). Mid June.

'Grape Leopard': Elepidote. (Parentage unknown). H (pre 1989): A.W. Smith, Niagara Falls, Ontario; G (1997), N (2000), and REG (2000): Doug Irish-Hosier, North East, PA. Fls 15/dome truss, broadly funnel-shaped, 1.75" (45mm) long x 3.25" (80mm) wide, 5 wavy-edged lobes; light purple (75A) throughout, with a large, dark maroon, densely spotted dorsal blotch. Truss 4.5" (115mm) high x 6" (150mm) wide. Lvs 3.5" (90mm) x 1.25" (30mm), narrowly elliptic, broadly acute apex, cuneate base, flat margins; semi-glossy, moderate olive green (146A) above, hairless.
