A fire that broke out in the early evening of August 20, 1997, forced the evacuation of hundreds of people from the community of Atkins in Smith County, and closed Route 11. The fire at the Marley Mouldings Plastics Warehouse burned all day the 21st, and it wasn't until the early morning hours of the 22nd that a special foam was brought in to douse the flames. Evacuations were deemed necessary because the smoke was thought to contain dangerous chemicals. Photos by Mark Hollandsworth, Steve Claris and Howard Swank
