DAILY DIGEST PENINSULA YARD LOOKED AT HIRING CITY FIREFIGHTERS NEWPORT NEWS SHIPBUILDING CONSIDERED HIRING THE NEWPORT NEWS FIRE DEPARTMENT TO HANDLE ITS FIRE-FIGHTING NEEDS, BUT DECIDED IT WOULD BE TOO COSTLY, SAID WILLIAM P. FRICKS, THE YARD'S CHIEF EXECUTIVE. IT WAS PART OF THE SHIPYARD'S DRIVE TO REDUCE COSTS BY EXAMINING THE USE OF OUTSIDE SERVICE PROVIDERS. THAT PUSH LED TO THE REPLACEMENT OF 75 UNION JANITORS AT THE YARD BY AN OUTSIDE CLEANING SERVICE. THE GIANT SHIPYARD CURRENTLY HAS ITS OWN FIRE DEPARTMENT, EMPLOYING 26 PEOPLE. ``WE ARE INTERESTED IN LOOKING AT ALMOST EVERYTHING WE DO TO SEE IF WE CAN DO IT MORE COST EFFECTIVELY OUTSIDE THE YARD,'' FRICKS SAID.
