Ernest Llwellyn Blanchette Osborne, born Aug. 20, 1910, at Harlem Hospital, was the son of Reginald and Mae Mignon Osborne. After the death of his mother, Ernest's father married Christobel Allen, who raised him. During his youth, he was a faithful attendee of Beulah Wesleyan Methodist Church.
Ernest attended the New York City schools through N.Y. Vocational School, W. 138th St. In 1930, he was hired by the I.R.T. Subway System. In 1940, when the City of New York acquired the Transit Co., Ernest took civil service tests and became platform conductor and then motorman. In January of 1975, he retired after 45 years of service. He married Alma Chatman and from this union, they had a son, Ernest, and a daughter, Christine. He was a founding member of the 52 Associated Friends and the N.Y.C. Transit Guild. After retirement, he joined the T.W.U. Retirees Association.
Ernest leaves to mourn their loss his wife, Alma; a son, Ernest L. Osborne; daughter, Christine Hammond; three grandchildren, Betsy Osborne, Vincent Hammond and Cheryl Pearsall; a great-granddaughter, Heather Clarke; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Osborne; a son-in-law, R. Vincent Hammond; a grandson-in-law, David Pearsall; a brother-in-law, Ephraim Solomon; a sister-in-law, Lorrayne Osborne; two nephews, Reginald Osborne and Robert Osborne; many cousins and a host of friends. His sisters, Hyacinth Solomon and Norma Osborne, and brother, Reginald Jr., predeceased him.
The Osborne family have been frequent visitors to Portsmouth for almost 70 years. Mrs. Osborne has many relatives in the Portsmouth-Norfolk area.
A graveside service will be conducted at noon Saturday in Lincoln Cemetery, Portsmouth. The family will assemble at the Fisher Funeral Home at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
