Joseph W. Barrett Sr., 80, of the 6400 block of Whittier Drive, died Feb. 25, 1997, in a local hospital.
A letter carrier/parcel postman with the U.S. Postal Service for 35 years before retiring 19 years ago, Mr. Barrett was a Norfolk native and the widower of Virginia Allen Barrett. He was a member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church and was active with the Sunday school. He was vice president of the Norfolk Senior Citizens Center, Huntersville. He was also an avid bowler.
Survivors include his daughter, Clara Barrett Powell; son, Joseph W. Barrett Jr. of Norfolk; sister, Ethel Barrett Greene of Statesville, N.C.; eight great-grandchildren, including Prell L. Gross, William L. Powell Sr., son-in-law, of Columbia, Md.; nine grandchildren, including Crystal Barrett Pollard of Chesapeake, Keith D. Barrett of Stafford, Va., William L. Powell Jr. of Rockville, Md., Laura N. Powell of Elizabethtown, Pa., and Halona V. Gorham of Norfolk; two nieces, Elaine B. Grant of Statesville, N.C., and Doris Turner of Simsbury, Conn. He was predeceased by a son, Calvin J. Barrett, and parents, Sadie B. Smith and John Henry Barrett.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in Mount Lebanon Baptist Church by Dr. Ronnie D. Joyner. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. There will be a wake service Sunday from 5 to 6 p.m. at Graves Funeral Home.
