SUFFOLK Man found dead in car in woods

A 46-year-old man was found dead in his car on a woods path early Tuesday, an apparent victim of gunshot wounds to his head.

Cleophus S. Norfleet of the 1000 block of Truman Road became the city's second homicide victim of the year.

Police spokesman Mike Simpkins said Norfleet was found sitting in the driver's seat of his car, a 1988 Oldsmobile, on a logging path off the 1200 block of Babbtown Road about 2:35 a.m.

A police officer patrolling the area spotted the car and discovered the body.

Police have not revealed the results of an autopsy done Thursday at the state medical examiner's office, but Chief Jimmy L. Wilson said the death was apparently caused by shots to the head.

In the first homicide of the year, the badly beaten body of Paul G. Schachner Jr., 56, of Norfolk was found Jan. 30 on the edge of the Tidewater Community College campus. No arrest has been made in his death. PORTSMOUTH Jury acquits woman who killed boyfriend

An 18-year-old woman charged with stabbing her boyfriend to death last year with a steak knife was found not guilty by a jury Thursday.

April C. Hill was acquitted during the one-day trial held in Circuit Court after jurors heard witnesses testify that her boyfriend, 17-year-old Dontray M. Riddick, had been beating her April 17.

Hill, of the 20th block of Wilson Parkway, testified that she stabbed him only once in self-defense. Witnesses said that Riddick, of the 1300 block of Barbour Drive, and Hill were arguing when he began attacking her.

Hill suffered from a sprain, contusions and other minor injuries. Riddick died at Maryview Medical Center. KEYWORDS: MURDER
