Joseph Graham Pollock, 86, of the 100 block of E. Maple St., died Friday, Feb. 28, 1997, in Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
Born July 17, 1910, in Duplin County, N.C., he was the son of the late Joseph Evans Pollock and Mamie West Pollock Maury. A graduate of North Carolina State University, he had earned B.S. and master's degrees and spent his life as a farmer, a registered land surveyor and teacher. He taught vocational agriculture in the Gates County Public School System for 38 years. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard, attaining the rank of lieutenant commander. A member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, he had formerly served on the vestry, was a former senior warden and formerly taught Sunday School. He was 60-year Mason and was a member of Gatesville Lodge (NU)126, AF&AM.
Preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Gatling Pollock, he is survived by his son, J. Graham Pollock Jr. of New York, N.Y., and Gatesville; his daughter, Clarine Gatling Pollock Powell and her husband, Robert J. Powell III of Greenville, N.C., and four grandchildren, Robert J. Powell IV, Graham Pollock Powell, John Gatling Powell and Catherine Gant Powell.
A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in St. Mary's Episcopal Church by the Rev. Donald V. Brand and the Rev. Billy Presley. Burial will follow in Gatesville Cemetery, with Miller Funeral Home in charge. Friends may join the family following the service in the Parish House of St. Mary's Church and all other times at the residence.
