UNC WILMINGTON HOLDS OFF AMERICAN

Second-seeded UNC Wilmington held off an American University rally to eke out a 54-50 victory Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association basketball tournament at the Richmond Coliseum.

The Seahawks (16-13) led by 11 points with 12 minutes left, but seventh-seeded American (11-16) rallied to take a 49-48 with five minutes left on a Dave Small layup. However, with UNC Wilmington leading 52-50 and 23.6 seconds remaining, Small missed two foul shots that would have tied the score.

UNC Wilmington then clinched the victory when Lamont Franklin made a pair of free throws with 17.8 seconds to play.
