THAT WAS THEN - 1920: THE FIRST BERKLEY BRIDGE

ILLUSTRATION: The first Berkley Bridge over the Eastern Branch of

the Elizabeth River extended from the foot of East Main Street in

Norfolk to South Main Street in Berkley. Built in 1916, the span

was originally privately owned, and pedestrians were charged 2 cents

to cross it. The city acquired it in 1946, and it was finally

demolished in 1952. Note the southbound trolley and the vintage

autos near the bridge draw in the center. At the far end of the

bridge and just to its left, stands Riveredge, the brick structure

in which Mary Pinckney Hardy, the mother of General of the Army

Douglas MacArthur, was born. - George Tucker
