The Old Dominion baseball team scored 17 runs on 19 hits, outscored Rutgers 10-4 in the last five innings - and still lost.
The Scarlet Knights won their second straight over Old Dominion by posting a football-like 21-17 decision against the Monarchs Sunday at the Bud Metheny Complex.
All of Rutgers' starters had at least one hit and one run in the game as the Scarlet Knights (2-1) led the Monarchs 17-2 after 3 1/2 innings. Adam Neubart went 5 for 6 with a pair of triples and five RBIs.
The Monarchs (9-3) scored the next 13 runs, drawing within two in the bottom of the eighth before the Knights scored four in the ninth.
Tony Gsell went 4 for 6 with his fourth home run, while Ron Walker had a homer and 4 RBIs.
ODU's David Bailey was the only pitcher to not give up at least one run; the other 10 pitchers gave up at least two, winner Keith Connolly coughed up six earned runs in 2 1/3 innings and loser John Cocoa gave up five earned runs in 1 2/3 innings work.
Over the last two games, Rutgers and Old Dominion combined for 68 runs, 68 hits, 10 home runs, 20 doubles, 12 errors, seven stolen bases and 21 different pitchers used. No pitcher lasted four consecutive innings.
