A 58-year-old Norfolk woman was killed and her 35-year-old son injured when their car stalled on Interstate 64 and was hit by two other cars, state police said.
The accident occurred about 11:15 a.m. Wednesday on the westbound side of the interstate, just east of the Route 44 on-ramp.
Lorne Payton was driving with his mother, Joycelyn Payton, in a 1990 Geo Metro that stalled in the center lane.
Seconds later, a man in a Honda Accord tried to stop but his vehicle struck the Metro in the left rear. A 1994 Mercury Sable then hit the Metro in the right rear, causing the Metro to spin 50 feet along the middle lane.
The impact crushed the Metro, pushing the rear of the vehicle into its front.
Part of I-64 was closed, causing traffic to be rerouted to Route 44 for about an hour while rescue workers freed the man and woman from the Metro.
Jocelyn Payton died at the scene, and her son was taken to a hospital.
Seat belts were worn by all the cars' occupants, including an infant in a child safety seat, state police said. KEYWORDS: ACCIDENT TRAFFIC FATALITY
