LOCAL VOLUNTEERS, GROUPS EARN ACHIEVEMENT HONORS

The following individuals and organizations were recognized Thursday night at the 1997 Hampton Roads VOLUNTEER Achievement Awards:

GROUPS

American Red Cross Volunteer Drivers for transporting blood to hospitals and other users seven days a week, including holidays.

Communications Security Material Issuing Office for adopting Easton Preschool, a handicapped school where they gave seven hours a week for three weeks a month.

Commonwealth Gas Co. for tutoring students at Westhaven Elementary School.

Exchange Club of Wythe, Inc. for constructing wheelchair ramps for people with disabilities.

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity for supporting Port Norfolk Elementary School financially, educationally and socially.

Making a Difference Foundation for tutoring and mentoring ``at risk'' children.

Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) for stressing community involvement among high school students.

Naval Security Group Activity, Northwest for an unmeasureable amount of service with numerous agencies.

Insight Enterprises, Inc. for starting The Peninsula Center for Independent Living to help persons with disabilities lead independent lives.

Virginia Marine Science Museum's Discovery Docents for stressing the importance of preserving endangered salt marshes.

Volunteers of Virginia Peninsula Council on Domestic Violence for helping battered women and their children.

Willoughby Elementary School's ``Shine Bright'' Program for developing programs that enhance student achievement and self-esteem.

Zonta Hampton Roads for their work with the Samaritan House and women in the community.

INDIVIDUALS

Jeff Albert for spending seven months organizing the 1996 Bruce Smith Charity Golf Classic that raised $78,000 for charity.

Connie Sue Brown for her work as Girl Scout Leader for Junior Troop 451.

Eugene F. Crabtree Sr. for promoting awareness of the Retired Activities Program.

Kathy Frederick for devoting seven hours a day as PTA president for James Hurst Elementary School.

Jane Hopkins for volunteering more hours than anyone at Tidewater Literacy Council where she tutors six adults.

Jolene Joy James Ink for coordinating James Hurst Elementary School's volunteer program.

Gerald Lavandosky for giving over 2,000 hours to the Alliance for the Mentally Ill.

Gwyndolyn Lee-Lomax for providing youth educational projects at John Tyler Elementary School.

Megan Lane McKinley for asking guests at her 15th birthday party to bring nonperishable foods, instead of presents, to be donated to the John Knox Food Pantry.

Pauline Morton for 30 years of volunteer work.

Betty Poladian for her work with Lee's Friends, a support group for cancer patients.

Michael Poyner for ensuring the success of fund-raisers and day-to-day activities for the Alzheimer's Association.

Wayne Francis Richardson for making Virginia Beach's Volunteer Firefighter Program one of the best on the East Coast.

Aleli Romero for organizing the Filipino Health Alliance to provide health screenings to people in the community.

Judy Smith for her work with Norfolk SPCA and Chrysler Museum.

Arlene Sollis for helping disabled individuals learn to read and write.

William Zimmerman for being WHRO's first official volunteer tour guide.

Randall Spink for leading the Naval Atlantic Meteorology and Oceanography Center in the training of more than 300 fifth grade students and 10 teachers.

PROGRAMS

Beach Health Clinic for providing quality care to uninsured residents of Virginia Beach who have limited financial resources.

FoodBank of Southeastern Virginia volunteers for giving more than 12,000 hours of their time each month.
