Retired U.S. Navy CPO Walter Gallaher, 79, of the 1600 block of Guthrie St., died March 7, 1997, in Norfolk.
A retired chief petty officer in the Navy, he served 24 years before retiring in 1960. He also retired from the Virginia Department of Highways after 18 years.
He was a Lynchburg native and an Episcopalian. He was a master gardener at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens, a 32nd-degree Mason, Fleet Reserve Association member, Branch 60. He was also a veteran of World War II and Korea.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Sanderson Gallaher; daughter, Sanda G. Payne and her husband, Dean, of Virginia Beach; son, Sam Gallaher of Norfolk; four grandchildren, Christopher Gallaher of Orlando, Fla., Samantha Gallaher of Greenville, N.C., Deana Payne and Ryan Payne, both of Virginia Beach; and mother-in-law, Anna Sanderson.
A graveside funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Colonial Grove Memorial Park by the Rev. Robert F. Pittman III. The family will receive friends in the residence from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday.
