Retired U.S. Navy Lt. Philip Carlyle Krouse, 73, a loving and devoted husband and father, died Saturday, March 8, 1997, at Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin.
A former resident of South Bend, Ind., he lived in Franklin in recent years with his wife of 43 years, Charlotte Goodwin Krouse. Born in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Carl and Jane McFarland Krouse.
Besides his wife, Charlotte, he is survived by two sons, Ian Krouse and his wife, Chika, of Los Angeles and Kevin Krouse of South Bend; daughter, Elizabeth Krouse of Virginia Beach; sister, Jane Hartman of Tehachapi, Calif.; three grandchildren, Nathaniel, Ryan and Eryn Krouse; two nieces, Jacqueline Meadows and Jody McFarland; and nephew, James Burriss.
A gifted sailor and mathematician, Mr. Krouse attended the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., during World War II. He then joined the U.S. Merchant Marine and earned the rank of lieutenant commander and master mariner. In 1948, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving as a navigation officer on many ships until he retired as a lieutenant in 1968. He was a navigation instructor at several Navy schools throughout the country. As a civilian, he continued to teach navigation for the navy. He also taught mathematics at the Lawrenceville School, Princeton, N.J., John Adams High School, South Bend, and Indiana University, South Bend campus. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Maryland and a master's degree in mathematics from the University of Notre Dame. He was an Episcopalian.
Funeral arrangements are pending with Purviance Funeral Home, Boykins. The family will be at the residence., 601 Clay St., Franklin. Memorial donations may be made to Franklin United Church of Christ, Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Franklin, or to the charity of one's choice. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
