Joseph Whitfield, 77, of the 1900 block of Maplewood Lane died March 9, 1997, in a local hospital.
A truck driver for 37 years, he was retired. Mr. Whitfield was a native of Edgecomb County, N.C., and a member of New Bethlehem Church of Christ Disciples.
Survivors include a special and devoted friend, Mrs. Lona K. Garrett; three daughters, Bessie Morris and Bertha Whitfield, both of Chesapeake, and Lenora Whitfield of Norfolk; three sons, Robert Lewis of Norfolk and John Whitfield and Eugene Whitfield, both of Chesapeake; five sisters, Mary Ella Everett of Macclesfield, N.C., Annie Brown of Rocky Mount, N.C., Lucy Griffin and Ethel Oree, both of Norfolk, and Aldine Whitfield of Elm City, N.C.; brother, Charlie Whitfield of Baltimore; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter; a special deacon, Jessie Riddick; and a host of relatives and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in New Bethlehem Church of Christ Disciples by Elder Protor Freeman Sr. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake.
