CIVIL WAR buffs: Time to fall in and march off into the 1860s. Pamplin Park Civil War site opens a new exhibit, ``A Land Worth Fighting For'' and is hosting a Civil War Weekend Saturday and next Sunday at Tudor Park, the plantation house on the grounds.
Maybe you don't know Pamplin Park. It's near Petersburg. It's a private historical park, owned and managed by the Pamplin Foundation of Portland, Ore. It was founded by Robert Pamplin Sr., a native of Dinwiddie County and a descendant of the Boisseau family that originally owned Tudor Hall.
The park preserves the ground where Union troops commanded by Lt. Gen. U.S. Grant broke through the elaborate Confederate defenses commanded by Gen. Robert E. Lee near Petersburg on April 2, 1865. This battle led to the evacuation of Petersburg and the march to the surrender place at Appomattox.
Tudor Hall, built in 1812, has been renovated to reflect both the Boisseaus' occupancy - a typical upper-middle class plantation before, during and after the war - and its use as a Confederate brigade headquarters.
The Civil War Weekend features living interpreters, including storyteller Dylan Pritchett portraying the life of a slave; and demonstrations, including re-enactors from the 16th Virginia Infantry from Billy Mahone's Brigade and the 155th New York Infantry from Buffalo.
Hours for the weekend are 9 a.m.-5 p.m.. Admission is $3 for adults, $1.50 for children 6-11. To get there from South Hampton Roads, take U.S. 460 west to Petersburg, then Interstate 85 south. From I-85 take exit 63A (U.S. 1 south) and go 3/4 mile and turn left on Virginia Route 670 (Duncan Road). Pamplin Park is 1/2 mile on the left. PICTURE THIS
Imagine yourself linguistically challenged, at a loss for words in some foreign country. And you need to make yourself understood. Where's that phrase book? Well, forget it.
Alan Stillman believes a picture is worth a thousands words. He's created Kwikpoint, a laminated, three-fold, pocket-size brochure containing more than 600 internationally recognized color illustrations of everyday items you may need - gasoline, lodging, telephone, ice cream, condoms. Even illustrations of how you want your meat cooked - rare, medium or well done.
The Pentagon reportedly has ordered over 80,000 to give to foreign-based U.S. servicemen and women. You can get one by sending a $6 check or money order to Gaia Communications, P.O. Box 238, Alexandria, Va. 22313-0238. Or you can order one from Magellan's catalog (800) 962-4943. BIRTHDAY BASHES
The 207th birthday of President John Tyler will be celebrated March 29 at Sherwood Forest, his Charles City County home. Activities begin at 11 with a welcome by his grandson Harrison Ruffin Tyler. Admission is $7.50 for adults, $4.50 for students, but visitors with a valid Virginia driver's license receive a $2.07 discount for the birthday events. Clever. Sherwood Forest is about 30 minutes west of Williamsburg on Virginia Route 5. Info: (804) 829-5377.
The 254th birthday of Thomas Jefferson will be celebrated April 13 at Monticello with a performance by the 3rd U.S. Infantry (Old Guard) fife and drum corps and a wreath-laying ceremony. Admission is $8. Monticello is just southeast of Charlottesville off I-64. Info: (804) 984-9822.
Another particularly interesting time to visit Monticello is July 4, the day on which the Jefferson-authored Declaration of Independence was made public (and the day of Jefferson's death 50 years later). More than 70 people from countries around the world will take the oath of U.S. citizenship on Monticello's west lawn, and retired Gen. Colin Powell will give the keynote address. GARDEN TOUR UPDATE
