Employment at Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co. topped the 25,000 mark with no hiring letup in sight.

The fifth annual St. Patrick's Day parade was held in Ocean View.

1947

At Suffolk High School, members of the Monogram Club sponsored the spring sports drive. The Girls' Glee Club participated in the regional music festival at Granby High.

The master of a Panamanian steamer, the George, was fined $750 in U.S. District Court for permitting an oil discharge from the ship's bilges.

1897

Bids for the construction of the superstructure of the Monticello Hotel were opened with the apparent low bid of $211,994 by E. Tatterson of Suffolk.

Norfolk and Western Railway announced a number of employee layoffs in the Norfolk operation.
