The master of a Panamanian steamer, the George, was fined $750 in U.S. District Court for permitting an oil discharge from the ship's bilges.

Bids for the construction of the superstructure of the Monticello Hotel were opened with the apparent low bid of $211,994 by E. Tatterson of Suffolk.
Norfolk and Western Railway announced a number of employee layoffs in the Norfolk operation.
