NEWS AND NOTES

Ceremony planned

Hundreds of candles will be lighted in memory of abused and neglected children during a ceremony on the steps at Virginia Beach City Hall March 25.

The event, called the Virginia Beach Candelight Ceremony for Abused and Neglected Children, will begin at 5:30 p.m.

One candle will be lighted for every case of child abuse and neglect in 1996, which number more than 500 in the city of Virginia Beach. Also nine candles will be lighted for the nine children who died of abuse in Hampton Roads during 1996.

There will also be a performance by a children's choir, and speeches by various city officials.

The event is sponsored by the Virginia Beach Child Advocacy Network to raise awareness of abused and neglected children.

Author at Founders Inn

Gary Smalley, an expert on family relationships, will give a lecture and sign books at The Founders Inn and Conference Center on April 11.

Smalley is the author of 12 books, including ``Love Is a Decision'' and ``The Hidden Value of a Man.''

Luncheon tickets are $22.50 a person; they may be purchased from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., Monday through Friday, in the lobby of the Studio Headquarters Building on the grounds of the Christian Broadcasting Network.

Call 677-7087, ext. 4.

Education costs up

Parents and high school seniors, don't let Darthmouth College's $29,507-a-year price tag scare you off. So begs James Freedman, the college's president, who says financial aid is available. Three other Ivy League colleges - Princeton, Cornell and Brown - have set new tuition rates for next year that put them in Dartmouth's league.
