SOL I. CHENMAN

Sol Irvin Chenman, 82, of the 500 block of 23rd Street, a loved and loving father, husband, brother, uncle and friend, died March 17, 1997, in a hospital.

Mr. Chenman was born in Norfolk. He was a member of Temple Emanuel in Virginia Beach, and was a gradute of Maury High School, class of 1932. He attended William and Mary College and the University of Virginia School of Law. Mr. Chenman served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. After the service, he joined the family scrap iron and steel business, L. Chenman Inc. He was one of the scrap community's most fascinating members and an early founder of the Scrap Iron and Steel Institute in Washington, D.C. After the death of his father in 1957, Mr. Chenman became the CEO of L. Chenman Inc., where he remained active daily until his recent illness.

He was a 32nd degree Mason in good standing at the Willis V. Fentress Lodge in Virginia Beach. He was a member of The Khedive Temple of Norfolk. Mr. Chenman was also an ``Horonary'' member of the 71st Street Anglers.

He was truly unique and loved by those who were privileged to be his family and friends. He was simply the old guy who still charged it.

Family is what made Mr. Chenman the proudest and what brought him the most happiness.

Survivors include his loving wife of 49 years, Bertha S. Chenman; his son Robert E. Chenman; and his devoted daughters, Marsha L. Chenman and Lee Ann Chenman; his sister, Mary and her husband Gene Hirschfeld, all of Virginia Beach, his sister, Dottie Jean Goodman of Atlanta, and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, 1997, at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk by Rabbi Elliott Marmon. The family will receive at 1320 Rolfe Lane, Virginia Beach, Va. 23451.

Memorial donations may be made to the Temple Emanuel Synagogue, Virginia Beach.
