A free, multicultural concert will be held at First Flight Middle School at 7 p.m. Sunday.
Labana, an international touring world music ensemble from Boston, Mass., features a seven-woman cast weaving together songs, dances and instrumental music in a performance of world cultures, handed down through women's artistic traditions.
The ensemble was founded in 1979 by director Susan Robbins. Members are equally versed in a capella Bulgarian vocal music, frenzied Egyptian drumming and graceful Hawaiian melodies.
Robbins' idea was to explore and perform pieces that reflect women's musical heritage. The artists perform in brilliant costumes and play numerous instruments.
Labana, in its 16th season, performs regularly in a broad range of festivals and musical events throughout the United States and in Canada.
The concert is sponsored by the Community United, an affiliate of the United Church of Christ. Donations will be accepted for The Caring for Children's Insurance Project.
Tickets are available at the door or in advance by calling 480-0241. ILLUSTRATION: CLIFFORD KEENEY
