City worker named

disabled professional

person of the year

Gary S. Cisco, a supervisor in the city's emergency operations center, was presented the ``Disabled Professional Person of the Year'' award by the Suffolk Pilot Club Wednesday.

Cisco, 39, has been paralyzed from the waist down since an accident on Sept. 16, 1988. A former city firefighter, he was on his way to work when a car collided with his pickup on Holland Road, causing the pickup to flip twice before landing upright in a ditch.

His 4-year-old son, David, who was riding in the front seat, was unhurt.

Five months after the accident, Cisco returned to work as a dispatcher, thanks to extensive rehabilitation at the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center in Fishersville.

He has been a supervisor since November 1992.

Cisco and his wife, Nancy, have two sons - David, now 13, and Brian, 9.

Cisco will be honored at a Pilot Club banquet on April 21, and his nomination will be forwarded to the state organization for consideration for the Outstanding Professional Person of the Year in Virginia.

The fire was caused by a malfunctioning gas heater mounted on the ceiling inside the store. Fire damage was minimal, but smoke damage to the store was moderate, Goldhorn said.
