Herman D. Coots Sr., 83, formerly of Orion Ave., died March 19, 1997, in a Virginia Beach nursing home.
He was born in Fife, Ala., and after completing high school in Woodberry, Ga., enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1936. Mr. Coots served for 30 years, retiring as a chief warrant officer. Mr. Coots then worked for eight years as a supervisor at the Naval Air Safety Center at the U.S. Naval Air Station, Norfolk.
For many years Mr. Coots was an active member of Chapter 2 of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. At the time of the 1941 Pearl Harbor attack, he was on active duty with VP/VPB-11 Squadron at the U.S. Naval Air Station in Kaneoke Bay, Hawaii.
Mr. Coots was a widower. After his first marriage to Lorita V. Coots ended, he was married to Maxine Coots, who died in 1976, and then to Margaret McCombs Coots, who died in 1995.
Survivors include his son, H. Donald Coots Jr. of San Leandro, Calif., and his wife, Alicia; his granddaughter, Stephanie Coots of Sacramento, Calif; and two great-granddaughters, Tarolyn and Christine Coots of Sacramento.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. today in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, is handling arrangements. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
