These were some of the stories reported by area newspapers the week of March 24:

1972

The Hot Line was a daily column in The Ledger-Star helping readers solve bureaucratic snarls and consumer problems.

Mr. and Mrs. Salvatore Bono, Sonny and Cher, made an appearance at Scope.

Pre-Easter retail sales at area businesses were ahead of 1971.

1947

The Navy Supply Depot conducted a sale of surplus office equipment for the War Assets Administration. Veterans' purchases totaled $2 million on the first day of the sale.

Norfolk City Council voted against instituting Daylight Saving Time.

1897

Fire in Portsmouth's downtown destroyed St. Paul's Catholic Church and many homes in the area of Washington, Green and Glasgow streets. Norfolk sent a hook and ladder truck to assist Portsmouth's Chambers fire company.
