SCHOOL BOARD COMMITTEE OPPOSES RENAMING SCHOOLS

After parents and students at three Deep Creek elementary schools turned down the idea of renaming their schools by a 2-1 margin, a School Board committee has recommended against the idea.

Committee chairman Roderic A. Taylor proposed that the board hold another public hearing in conjunction with another survey of Deep Creek parents as to whether the support is there to name the next school to be built for longtime principal Charles S. Brabble Sr.

Earlier this month, the School Board decided to name a new middle school on Cedar Road for Hugo A. Owens Sr.

However, strong support for Brabble moved board members to vote to look into the possibility of naming another school for him. While parents and students rejected renaming an existing school, the possibility for naming a new school for Brabble was left open.

Taylor said that at the next meeting he would recommend a date for a public hearing specifically on naming a new school for Brabble.

If the idea is turned down by the public, the School Board would then hold public hearings in which other names would be entertained.
