The Greater Hampton Roads Division of the March of Dimes will celebrate WalkAmerica throughout April and May at more than 10 walk sites in the area.
The Portsmouth/Chesapeake portion of WalkAmerica will be April 20 at Western Branch High School.
Registration is at 1 p.m., and the walk begins at 2 p.m.
Those interested in participating should call the March of Dimes Hampton Roads Division at 486-1001 or 1-800-732-7097 for a registration/sponsorship envelope. Walkers raise funds by asking friends, family members, business associates and neighbors to sign on as sponsors by donating a flat fee.
The walk is held to raise funds for the March of Dimes campaign for healthier babies. The Greater Hampton Roads Division is expecting 7,000 walkers at its different sites.
Other Hampton Roads sites include the Virginia Beach Oceanfront on April 27 and Constance Wharf in Suffolk, also on April 27.
The Greater Hampton Roads Division has participated in WalkAmerica since 1960. Since that time, WalkAmerica funds have enabled March of Dimes to sponsor programs of research, community service, education and advocacy to help prevent birth defects and infant mortality.
Last year, more than $350,000 was raised for the Greater Hampton Roads Division through WalkAmerica. The 1997 goal is $370,000.
