VIRGINIA BEACH
Firefighters install smoke
detectors for those in need
Virginia Beach firefighters will be visiting residents of Reedtown, Gracetown and the Lake Smith area today to deliver and install free smoke detectors and batteries. Firefighters will visit residents who have fliers that were distributed in the neighborhoods posted on their homes.
In the past two years, residents of Seaside, Triangle, Trailer City and Colony trailer parks, and Queen City, Newlight, Doyletown, Beechwood, Mill Dam, Newsome Farms and Seatack neighborhoods have received smoke detectors through the joint efforts of the fire departments, Housing and Neighborhood Preservation and a HUD Community Development block grant.
In addition to the grant program, the Fire Department's Operation Smoke Detector Program, which was established by firefighters and the Virginia Beach Kiwanis Club, offers free fire detectors to anyone who cannot afford one or cannot install one.
All residents who cannot afford a smoke detector or are not able to install one, may call Operation Smoke Detector at 471-5826.
Lawyers shed serious side
for region's ``funniest'' title
Lawyers, whether they be celebrity defense attorneys or ambulance chasers, are nearly always thought of as serious people: Three-piece suits and conservative ties, country clubs and golf, BMWs and Grand Cherokees.
That could change on April 25 when seven local legal eagles attempt to shed the ``serious'' label by vying to become the region's ``funniest lawyer.''
The competition, sponsored by Family Services of Tidewater Inc., will be held at Grand Affairs on Pleasure House Road in Virginia Beach. It will start at 7 p.m. Cost to attend is $15 and includes heavy hors d'oeuvres.
Money raised from the event, which will include a silent auction, will go to benefit Camp Civitan, a summer recreation program for persons with mental disabilities.
Competing for the ``funniest'' title will be: Michael F. Imprevento of Breit, Drescher and Breit; Michael A. Robusto of Slipow, Robusto and Kellam; Philip L. Russo Jr. of Schafer and Russo; George Schaefer of the Norfolk Circuit Court Clerk's Office; James M. Boyd of Boyd and Boyd; Mark Del Duca of the Virginia Beach City Attorney's Office and Katherine E. Fine of Fine, Fine, Legum and Fine.
